When Alice Augusta Wood was born on July 21, 1890, in New Zealand, her father, Edward, was 54 and her mother, Sarah, was 38. She was the second of the four children to be born to Edward and Sarah at Naseby. Alice was enrolled at Naseby school at the age of 5 in 1895 and left in 1905 having passed Standard 3. Her destination was “home duties”.
Whether Alice went north to find work, or whether she initially went to join her older sisters Amelia and Eleanor we don't’ know. But by 1911 she was listed in the Palmerston North electoral roll as living in Carrow St, and in 1914 she is listed as being in Auckland.
She married Percy Leonard Kennedy in Wellington in 1919 at the age of 29, an Ironmoulder from Wellington. She, like her older sisters, was a seamstress, and worked for a Wellington tailor from her home. They had two children during their marriage and lived most of their married life in Mornington in Wellington. Alice died on December 6, 1971 at the age of 81 and her ashes are buried in the Karori Cemetery Percy died at the age of 98 and his ashes are also in the Karori Cemetery. Granddaughter Jenny McGrane recalls his love of doing the newspaper crosswords. Magician tricks (from Uncle Vic) Uncle Vic had kept a book from his bookshelf about this art.
