John Wood was born circa 1735, in Leicesterhsire, England and immigrated before the the American Revolutionary War to Botetourt county, Virginia. John enlisted as a soldier in the Botetourt county Militia. [1] Many of the veterans of the Revolutionary War were given land grants, and possibly John was one, as he relocated his family to the Spartanburg District of South Carolina, where he died before December 22, 1819. According to the Spartanburg courthouse, John moved to South Carolina and lived on the waters of Fairview Forest. John was one of the founders of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in South Carolina.
John Wood is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolutionary War as Ancestor #A128026. DAR records give John's wife's name as Maiden Seay. Applications for membership in the Society have been made by the descendants of his son, James Wood, who married Susanna Burnett; and of his daughters, Mary Ann Wood, who married Edmond W. Chapman; Jane Wood, who married Stephen Pace; and Cynthia Wood, who married John Wingo. [2]

Will of John Wood
In the name of God, amen. I, John Wood, of the district of
Spartanburg, State of South Carolina, carpenter, being in a low state of health, but sound in memory thanks to almighty God, and calling to mind the shortness of the life of man, I have thought fit and prepared to make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say my soul I give into the hands of God and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian manner as the decision of my
Executors after named and as my worldly goods it hath pleased God of his goodness to endow me with I dispose of them as followeth:
Item. In premises I lend and bequeath unto my loving wife Maiden Wood the plantation or tract of land, whereon I now live with all the stock and furniture, except what is after mentioned, during her life and widowhood and after her death to be equally divided amongst all my children except the land which my will and desire is for my sons to have it.
Item. I give unto my son James Wood a tract of land whereon he now lives, the quantity unknown, running from the Lawrence line to the Creek, thence up the Creek to Gray's line, from thence to the Joseph Lawrence line, then to the beginning. And the remainder of my tract of land to be equally divided between my son John Wood and my son Coleman
Wood. I give and bequeath to my son John Wood one two year old mare colt. I give to Coleman Wood the colt my old mare is now with fold if it comes to perfection. If not, Coleman has the value of John's filly in other property.
My will and desire is that my daughters may have at the time of their marriage, one bed and furniture, one cow and colt, one sow and pigs, one ewe and lamb each. Lastly, I appoint my son James Wood and my son John Wood Executors to this my last testament thereby revoking all and every form declaring what is contained in this my last testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of December 1802, viz., the part of the mill that is in the company of myself and Brannon, I leave to my wife as the other property I left her, and after her death or marriage, to be equally divided amongst all my children.
Signed and sealed this 28th of December 1802. John [his X mark] Wood
