Biography

Lynn was born in 1907 in northwest Arkansas, the child of Abraham Wood and Virgie Allen. His children didn't recall him ever being called Ivan, but that names appears on the 1910 census. Since his parents were well educated, the census name has more credibility than some. His grandaughter, Ina Baskin, believes his name was originally Lyndon Aaron Wood, but he began using just Lynn when he was an adult.

Lynn's father was struck by lighting and died in 1911, leaving his mother with two young boys to raise. The family of Lynn's father did little to help the young widow, but she survived with support from her own family. Lynn , his brother Byron and mother Virgie lived many years of his youth with his maternal grandparents in New Blaine. None the less, he quit school after 8th grade, often blaming the early death of a father he was too young to remember and the need to earn a living. At the age of 21, Lynn married Hazel Hamilton in 1928. He managed a small general merchandise store in Delaware (owned by Roy Rollans) in the early years of his marriage. By 1934, he had five children with two sets of twins.

Around 1940 he moved his family into his maternal grandfathers home in New Blaine. It was located a little south east of New Blaine, on a hilltop at the end of Little Shoal Creek Lane. He improved and expanded the home over the years and farmed part of the 20 acres, raised pigs, chickens and milk cows. Hunting would also supplement the family's food. He joined the army on April 7, 1944 and was released October 12, 1944 due to "incompatibility" often found in the older recruits. Despite the short service he was still able to take advantage of education benefits from the GI Bill until 1950. As his children grew older, the isolation on the farm kept them from getting employment in nearby towns to supplement the family income. Money was tight. Eventually, a chicken plant in opened in Dardanelle and Hazel became employed.

Over the decades Lynn completed many upgrades to the original Tim Allen home; added a rock foundation, lowered the ceilings which peaked at 16 feet, added flooring, enclosed the beezeway that went north-south through the house, added electricity, plumbing, modernized the kitchen, added a bath, built a barn and smokehouse, changed the siding from unpainted board and batt, and finally added an enormous enclosed back porch.

He died in 1976 about a year after suffering a stroke. His wife Hazel provided care for him, at home despite the severity of his incapacitate. He passed away in 1976.

Lynn had homemade biscuits, gravy, eggs and sausage for breakfast every morning, smearing the biscuits in sorghum and butter. I often wondered if granny knew she was feeding him into an early grave! I doubt he would have listened to our advice had we recommended a change in menu.
