Biography

Royal Wood is a Military Veteran.
Served in the United States Company F, 1st Regiment of the Michigan Calvary Volunteers August 20th, 1861 (when he was 42 years old).-1865
Served during US Civil War. He was taken prisoner at Decatur, Georgia at the battle of Bull Run, Virginia, on about August 3, 1862. Prisoner of War records show him paroled at Groveton Battlefield Sept 2, 1862. He was later reported to be wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, receiving a gunshot wound to the arm (shoulder). He served under General Custer at the battle of Gettysburg. They also state he was accidently wounded in the hand about October 4th, 1863 and was sent to the hospital. He was also diagnosed with diarrhea October 10 to November 28, 1863. Royal Rufus Wood was honorably discharged August 20th, 1864 at Detroit, MI.

When Royal Rufus WOOD was born on May 10, 1822, in Augusta, New York, his father, Si, was 32 and his mother, Catherine, was 32. He married Hannah SAUNTER Wood and they had four children together. He then married Mary B. Beech Hersey Wood and they had three children together between 1855 and 1860. He died on October 25, 1907, in Rochester, Michigan, having lived a long life of 85 years.

Royal Rufus Wood was born in Augusta Township, Oneida County, New York on May 10, 1822 to parents Si and Catherine (maiden name unknown) Wood. He first shows up as a resident of Michigan in the 1850 U.S. Census. The information that follows comes from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System website (www.civilwar.nps.gov/), his State muster records, Rochester MI Mount Avon Cemetery listing in Oakland County, US & Canadian Census records, and his federal Civil War pension records.

Royal served in Company F, 1st Regiment of the Michigan Calvary Volunteers, which he joined as a private at Detroit, MI on August 20th, 1861 when he was 42 years old.

According to War Department Pension records, Royal was taken prisoner at the battle of Bull Run, Virginia, on about August 3, 1862. Prisoner of War records show him paroled at Groveton Battlefield Sept 2, 1862. He was later reported to be wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, receiving a gunshot wound to the arm (shoulder). He served under General Custer at the battle of Gettysburg. They also state he was accidently wounded in the hand about October 4th, 1863 and was sent to the hospital. He was also diagnosed with diarrhea October 10 to November 28, 1863.

Royal Rufus Wood was honorably discharged August 20th, 1864 at Detroit, MI. Apparently Royal R Wood was missing for an extended period of time after the Civil War and his window Mary B. Wood filed for a windows pension, which was granted at the rate of .00 per month to commence on February 18, 1896. After the war he lived in Houseys Rapids, Ontario, Canada for over 20 years before returning to Michigan and was unable to obtain permanent employment due to his disabilities and old age. He was later granted a pension (#1061351) of .00 per month from the Federal Government for his service. According to some of the answers to questions on his pension paperwork, Royal Rufus Wood was 5 feet 9 inches tall, 150 lbs, blue eyes, blond hair, and blond complexion. He also stated he had “ruptured” his left hand, with permanent scars due to 1) a wound on his left hand and two fingers disabled and 2) one shot in the right shoulder at Gettysburg.

Mr. Wood was first married to Hannah Saunter. They had four children: William, Charles, Lester, and Jane. It is unknown what happened to Hannah but she likely died. He later married Mary B. Hersey Beech and they raised three children: Catharine Wood, Mary Wood, and Franklin Hersey. His occupation prior to the Civil War was head sawyer in the saw mills and he moved around often in search of employment and as a result did not own any personal property.

Royal Rufus Wood died October 25, 1907 in Rochester, Oakland County, MI as a result of Brights Disease complicated by chronic diarrhea and is buried in the Mount Avon Cemetery, Rochester, Oakland County, MI.
