Biography

USS Midway (CVB-41)

As a youth Bob would spend his summers out on his grandfather, Gus Froelich's farm near Bakersville, Ohio. Family photographs show Bob and his Uncle Elmer working with the horses.

At the tender age of 17 Bob joined the Navy on 3/7/1945 and had the good fortune of being assigned to the U.S.S. Midway (CVB-41) on her maiden voyage , 9/10/1945. He served 1yr 4mths and 10 days and received an honorable discharge on 7/16/1946.

He became a "Plank Owner" for being on the Midway's maiden voyage. The Midway is now a floating museum in San Diego, California.

Working as a laborer at a local chemical plant Bob spent long hours at work but being tireless he maintained a huge family garden and even managed a little league baseball team to a county championship.

With three boys and a girl there were many school activities that he attended at a cost. He would have to trade shifts at work resulting in many double-backs and lost sleep.

Never one to speak bad of others and very slow to anger he made friends easily and was well liked by many.

Bob was an avid coin collector and could be found in his work shop looking over his collection and planning his next purchase. His favorite coin was the Morgan Silver Dollar.

In 1963 Bob decided to move his family out of town and into the country where there was plenty of space for three young boys to run and play but little chance of getting into trouble. A new home in a new development filled the bill and his plan worked out as his boys managed to stay out of trouble. It's that very house, in which long hours and much sweat went into making it a home, that Bob had a fatal heart attack.

His wife Jeannette held on to that home for another 17 years but finally had to move into assisted living and leave so many good memories behind.
