Biography

Unknown Origins

Elizabeth Wood was a widow at the time of her marriage to William Bradway. She was incorrectly identified by Shourds as a daughter of Christopher White, but he had no daughter Elizabeth, and his son Christopher was born after her marriage to William Bradway.

Who were her first husband and parents?
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Given she was a widow in 1687 when she was married, DOB is estimated as before 1667 (age 20 at time of marriage).

Marriage

"In 1687 William Bradway married Elizabeth Wood, a widow. Their daughter Sarah married Mr. Wright (SCGD 1: 285; 1st Cong 1: 196-197; Hinshaw 2: 56)."[1]

Elizabeth was a Friend (Quaker)

Married: about 26 JUL 1687 in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey[2] at the Salem Friends Monthly Meeting.[3]

Children

According to Corrections to Shourds, the children of William Bradway and Elizabeth (Unknown?) (Wood) Bradway were:

  1. Sarah Bradway, b. 1690
  2. Edward Bradway, b. 1692
  3. William Bradway, b. 1695
  4. Jonathan Bradway, b. 1698/9
  5. Elizabeth Bradway, b. 1701

Death

The last recorded child of Elizabeth was born in 1700. William Bradway married his second wife in 1703. Elizabeth must have died between 1700 and 1703.

The Salem records are a goldmine, they're not entirely indexed by Ancestry. I made the best transcription I could on William Bradway's page.

Heather, I think you're correct, her LNAB is currently unknown, and it was her last name as the widow ??? Wood under which she was married to William Bradway.

Maybe you can find her husband ??? Wood, who must have died before her second marriage on 26 JUL 1687. His death was probably at least six months before that date, because the Quakers frowned on a hasty remarriage for a widow or widower.

Good Hunting:)

Quick question--before we merge, her LNAB might not be Wood. Setting as unmerged match until we can check the records. There are at least two Quaker families named Wood in West Jersey at this time.

"William Bradway married first, on 26 Sept 1687 Elizabeth Wood, a widow from Newton with children".

White-16718 and Wood-981 appear to represent the same person because: William Bradway was only married twice, to Elizabeth Wood, and 2nd to Patience (Unknown). Elizabeth White-16718 was originally created with parents: daughter of Christopher White and Hester Wyatt. These parents never had a daughter named Elizabeth. There is no source, and during her years of supposed marriage to William Bradway he was married to Elizabeth Wood. Please let's merge Elizabeth White away into Elizabeth Wood and put this Internet fake to rest:). Thank you, April Dauenhaeur
