About 1639 she emigrated from England, with her husband and five children. Her husband James died on the ship "Martin" en-route and was buried at sea. [6] She settled in Milford, Connecticut and was one of the first settlers of that town.

The First Congregational Church of Milford, Connecticut was organized in 1639 and she was admitted into membership on 01 Nov 1640. Due to her "affliction" of widowhood, she received extra land during the Milford, CT land division. Her home lot #54 was located on Broad Street.

She died on 11 June 1649 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut [6] and was buried in Rev. Peter Prudden's garden. No gravestone remains. but there is a memorial stone with inscription, on the Founders Bridge over the Wepawaug River, which runs through Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA. [7] [8]

Research Notes

Martha Beard, from Epping, Essex, England, arrived in New England in 1640, and resided in Milford.[9]

Is it possible the following could be Martha's birth record ? ... born in Essex, England & baptised on 02 Apr 1598 in Epping, Essex, England with father William. [10] [11].

Examination of the Olive Tree Passenger lists for all ships from England to New England between 1634 and 1639, did not show James Beard, Martha, or the children. Olive Tree's passenger list for "The Martin", which arrived before July 1638, apparently only contains the names of witnesses related to Sylvester Baldwin's death. [12]
