Jane was born in Halifax County, Virginia according to information on her son Samuel Knight's death certificate in 1912.[1] Another son, William Marshall Knight shows on his North Carolina death certificate in 1926 that his mother "Jensie" Woodall was born in Stokes County, North Carolina.[2]

Jane was age 48, born VA, in the 1850 census for Rockingham County, North Carolina. She resided in the household of her husband William Knight, age 50 and their children: Johanna, 21; James, 20; Samuel, 18; Jane,16; Eliza, 14; Elizabeth, 11; and William M., 5. [4]
