Biography

William2 Woodbury, the son of William Woodbury, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Patch, was baptized South Petherton, Somersetshire, England, 7 May 1620. Reportedly from the parish registers,[1][2] "1620, Maij 7 Baptizati fuerunt Wilhelmus filius Wilhelmi [Woodbery]." Then a resident of Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, William2 died before 23 January 1667/8 (date of inventory).[3]

William2 Woodbury married at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, Middlesex, England, Judith Finne.17 April 1651, William2 Woodbury.[4][5] She was baptized at St. Dunstan's 12 April 1629, said 7 days old, the daughter of William Finne and his wife, Mary (Charwood) Lofte.[6][7] She died at Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts, 31 October 1702.[8][9] After William's death, Judith married again, probably Beverly, Essex County, after 26 April 1668,[10] as his second or third wife, John Rayment.[11]

Immigration

The details of his immigration are not known. Of William's father, Robert Charles Anderson wrote (2015), "William Woodbury of Misterton, brother of John, immigrated in 1636."[12] William Woodbury almost certainly brought his wife and young children with him to New England in 1636 or thereabouts.

At some point, William (the son), a mariner, returned to England where he married. Several children were baptized and/or buried there, at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, England, before he returned again to New England with his wife and family.

At Massachusetts Bay

By 1663, William2 Woodbury had acquired ten acres "nere snake hill."[13][14]

On 27 April 1665, "William Woodbery of Salem ... marenor," purchased a dwelling house with five acres of land on the Cape Ann Side from "William Dodg, Juny'r."[15][16]

William died intestate, between 22 November 1667 (birth of youngest child) and 31 March 1668 (administration granted). He probably died shortly before 13 : 11 : 1667 [13 January 1667/8], the date his estate inventory was taken by Tho. Lawthorpe, Wm Dixeye and John Hill. From the court record of his inventory,[17]

Wearing apparel, musket, bedstead and bedding; "one dwelling house, barne & five acker of land" (£110), also "fiveteene accers of upland" (£15), and a cow and "towe pigs," other items; total, £188. 10s. 6d. The estate owed £100, £50 of which belonged to three of the children, given to them by their grandmother.

The court ordered the £50 due to three of the children be paid "at age or marriage." The "younger daughter" was to receive £10 "at the age of eighteen or time of marriage."[18]

Family

William and Judith (Finne) Woodbury were the parents of eight children,[19][20]

  1. Infant Woodbury, a C[h]risome, buried St. Dunstan's, 22 September 1652.[21]
  2. Mary Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 15 February 1653/4, said 5 days old,[22] buried St. Dunstan's, 25 April 1654.[23]
  3. Elizabeth Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 17 March 1655/6, said one day old;[24] married John Richards.
  4. Mary Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 1 June 1657, said 5 days old,[25] buried there, 15 December 1658.[26]
  5. Hannah Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 1 October 1659, said one day old;[27] married Roger Haskell/Haskall.
  6. William Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 30 July 1663, said 4 days old, [28] buried there 30 August 1663.[29]
  7. William Woodbury, born probably Salem, Massachusetts, 10 March 1665[?/6],[30] baptized First Church of Beverly, 26 April 1668;[31] no further record.
  8. Judith Woodbury, born probably Salem, 22 November 1667,[32] baptized First Church of Beverly, 26 April 1668;[33] married Ephraim Herrick.

Children Elizabeth, Hannah, William and Judith Woodbury were admitted to Beverly First Church when it was established. From the chuch records, "24 : 5 : mo. 1668. It beeing propounded unto ye Brethern of this Church that they should give in to ye Pastor ye names of their Children in Minority wch were dismissed from Salem Church together wth their parents to be under the watch of this church as they grow up. Death. The profile previously reported he died 31 March 1668 in Salem, Essex, Plymouth Colony. He died before that date. William was a mariner; the location of his death has not been discovered.

Which Grandmother--Woodbury or Finne? It is not known whether their paternal or maternal grandmother left a legacy to the children of William and Judith (Finne) Woodbury. Only the children's maternal grandmother, Mary (Charwood) (Lofte) Finne, was deceased at the time the court record was entered; the research continues.

Chrisome. Refers to a cloth placed over an infant at baptism. The term is also used to refer to children who died shortly after baptism. See Robert Nares, A glossary ... of words, phrases, names, and allusions to customs, proverbs, etc., which have been thought to require illustration, in the words of English authors ..., 2 vols (London : J.R. Smith, 1859), 1:160; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Wives and children detached. A prior version of this profile reported, "Judith Glover and Judith Fine were previously listed as wife of William. These have been detached but still exist and should be used if any confirming data is ever found." No link was provided for the severed children profiles and they seem not to return in a google search.

A prior version of this profile reported, "John, Abigail, Nathaniel, Hannah Woodbury Baker and Priscilla have been removed as children of William & Judith as there is no source to support this and the church records indicate only 4 children (see above)." No link was provided for the severed profiles. Unless something was overlooked, the profiles of the severed children are not apparent from the change log. The search continues.

Dearborn and Arthaud (2021) included the 1665 William Dodg Juny'r to William Woodbery transaction in the narratives of both William1 Woodbury (p. 208) and William2 Woodbury (p. 215). In both accounts, the property was described as "a dwelling house with five acres of land at Cape Ann Side," citing "Essex County Deeds, 2:113." On 13 January 1667/8, two years after the land purchase, the estate inventory of William2 Woodbury included property with a matching description, "dwelling house, barn and five acres of land." Lacking further analysis, based on that 1667/8 estate inventory, the 1665 grantee is presumed William2 Woodbury.

Another Bio? A prior version of this profile included note "According to an article in NEHBR, Vol. 71 and the Patch family website, Judith Woodbury Herrick was the daughter of William Woodbury and Judith Glover. She was born on November 22, 1667 in Beverly, Massachusetts. On January 2, 1689, she married Ephraim Herrick in Beverly. He was the son of Ephraim Herrick and Mary Cross, born in Beverly on August 13, 1664. The couple had three children born in Beverly by 1692. Between 1692 and 1696, they moved to Preston, Connecticut. They had six more children in Preston, including Priscilla. Both Ephraim and Judith died in Preston." "NEHBR, Vol 71" would seem otherwise "Patch," Genealogical Research in England," "NEHGR, 71 (1917):166-179, but no claim is found therein regarding Judith Glover, etc. According to 2021 authors Dearborn and Arthaud, the article did misidentify James Patch, "corrected by Winifred Lovering Holman, who proved James1 Patch could not have been a son of Nicholas1 and Elizabeth (Owley) Patch, although he was probably a cousin. For this correction, authors cite "Winifred Lovering Holman Papers, R. Stanton Avery Special Collections Department of NEHGS, Mss 902, Patch folder, 8-9, 15-19."

If there are no objections, I plan to update the LNAB of his wife to Finne. Will update the narrative, including the child list and research notes accordingly. :-) Gene

Have made various updates to his profile and updated the LNAB for his wife, who is now WikiTree's Finne-83.

We previously talked about a 'PPP for now wife Judith Finne, given the array of variants and even more internet myths concerning her LNAB and ancestry.

If the PGM project members are still inclined to PPP Judith, this would be a good time.--Gene

Unless there are objections, I am going to update this profile a bit. Will integrate information from just published article in NEHGR. Plan to also link references to public domain counterparts, where possible.

If folks have additional sources of information that should be included, please let me know. --Gene

Profile data field and narrative report he died "31 March 1668," but this is not accurate.

His widow was granted administration of his estate at Ipswich Quarterly Court on 31 March 1668. (Records and Files .., 4:10-11)

A more accurate date for his death, however, is "before 23 January 1667/8"--the date of his estate inventory.

See George Francis Dow, Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex, Massachusetts (Salem, Mass. : Essex institute, 1911-1975), 9 vols., 4:18; digital images, Hathi Trust; Ipswich Quarterly Court, held at Ipswich, 31 March 1668; from p. 18, William Woodbury, jr. inventory dated 23 : 11: 1667 by Tho. Lawthorpe, Wm Dixeye and John Hill, £188. 10s. 6d; owned £100, including £50, "which belonged to three of the children, which was given them by their grandmother."

Are there any objections to updating the data field and narrative as to his date of death? --Gene

Edited to add: Data field reports he died at "Salem, Essex, Plymouth Colony"; narrative has "Massachusetts, American Colonies." The more accurate description of the location is "Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony."

Speaking of hot off the press!

With due respect to Dearborn and Arthaud, the date of inventory is the more accurate "before" cornerstone date.

Many of the children on this profile have birthdates too early for their parents' birth years.

The marriage date cannot be correct; He would have been 14 when they married, and she would have been 7 years old.

Is there a # for the Sons of American Revolution information for him?

posted by S (Hill) Willson
There are enough discrepancies and insufficient sources to be certain that Woodbury-662 and Woodbury-212 are the same person. Strongly suggest sources be added to -212 and -662 to support all vital information. Wives on -212, for example, would have been 7 years old when marrying William. Wife on -662 wasn't even born until 1640, after the birth of many children shown on -212.
