According to the Biographical Index of South Australian 1836 – 1885[1], John was born in Lincoln in England circa 1816 and emigrated to South Australia with his wife Susanna and four children in 1859. They sailed on the “North”[2] which left Liverpool on 1st November 1858 and arrived in Port Adelaide on 28th January 1859[3].
The passenger list provides the following information:
We know from the Death Notice[4] for his daughter Sarah that John was deceased when she died on 28th November 1880 which means that John died between 1859 and 1880. The Death Notice says that he was from Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills. A search of the Death records has a John Woodcock passing away on 28th December 1871 near Gumeracha and he was aged 57 [5]which means that he would have been born circa 1814. No relative was listed so it can’t be conclusively shown that it was this John Woodcock but the details are close and this is the only John Woodcock listed as dying in South Australia the period from 1859 to 1915 that would have been born circa 1814-1816.
