Biography

Jacob Woodcock was born in 1811 in Addington or adjacent Frontenac County, Upper Canada. In 1819 he was with his parents in Portland Township, Frontenac County. In or after 1834 he married Jane Hyland. They had five children. He died in Loughborough, Whitchurch Township (York North) in 1887, styled as "yeoman."

Note

Dozens of family histories have Jacob Woodcock, son of Abraham, born in 1811 or 1814 in Frontenac County and died 22 Jan 1887 in York County. Maybe 40% of these histories have his mother Katharine/Katy/Treinkia Peterson, maybe 40% have her Lavinia Marsh, and the rest have her Hannah Card. (1) Abraham Sr. and Catharine/Treinka (born in ~1769 had 11 children, 1784-1808 and mayhap Jacob in 1811 or 1814. (2) Lavinia Marsh was the wife of an Abraham Woodcock who was a son of Nicholas Woodcock who was the son of Isaac Woodcock (born 1707), not immediately related to the Abraham/Katharine family (though this Abraham's brother Peter married Elishia/Allada Alice Woodcock, daughter of Abraham Sr. and Katharine). (3) Hannah Card, wife of Abraham Woodcock Jr., lived ~1801 to 1892 and was too young to have been the mother of Jacob. Jacob had a Loyalist land claim approved in 1833 that has him the son of Abraham Woodcock UEL.

His birth is recorded both for 1811 in Fredericksburgh Township, Addington County, and for Loughborough Township, Frontenac County. [Adjacent Portland Township is more likely.] Ontario Deaths records his death 22 January 1887 at age 75 years 7 months, which favors an 1811 birth. Additional strong evidence for 1811 is that his Loyalist land petition was approved in 1833; eligibility for sons of UEL Loyalists began at age 21.

According to Ancestral Tree "Simmill and Green" at Ancestry.com, Jacob and Jane had five children: Sylvester 1835, Joel 1838, Mary Ann 1843-1939, Margaret 1847, and Thomas James 1849. Mary (1847) and Everett (or Herbert Everett) have also been reported as children.
