Biography

Sailed from England in 1864/65 on the ' Rob Roy ' arriving at Auckland in 1865 settling first at Warkworth, then Kaipara Hills, and finally Auckland after leaving the railway.

"MR HENRY WOODCOCK. The recent death of Mr Henry Woodcock, of Auckland, removes another of the disappearing band of early pioneers. He was a man of sterling character. Born in Jersey Island in 1849, he came of an old Coventry family, his father having banking interests there. Mr Woodcock received his education in France and the Island of Jersey.' He came to his brothers in New Zealand as a lad of 16, on the sailing vessel Rob Roy, arriving in 1865, the journey taking over 100 days. This vessel brought the first locomotive to New Zealand. For a considerable number of years Mr Woodcock had an exceedingly varied career, being connected with surveying, sawmilling, and goldmining at the Thames. He was in the employ of the Railway Department as a stationmaster, and finally took up the block of 800 acres of land known as “Glen Tui,” in the Kaipara Flats district. He married Sarah, eldest daughter of the late John Southgate (the “father” of Warkworth). [1] There were 11 children of the marriage, six of whom pre-deceased him after attaining manhood and womanhood. He took a prominent interest in local affairs, was a member of the local road board, and up to the time of his leaving the district, he was a member of the Rodney County Council. Mr Woodcock has lived in retirement in Auckland for the past 23 years. , His wife died in 1920, and later he remarried. He is survived by his widow, four sons and one daughter, the eldest, Richard, residing in Remuera. Auckland; Louis, Kaipara Flats; Mrs McNeil, Totara North; Cecil, Whangaroa; and Kenneth, Maungakaramea."
