Biography

Anthony Wodhull, Esq., born about 1517 (aged 14 in 1531), was the son and heir of Nicholas Wodhull, Esq. and his first wife, Mary Raleigh.[1][2] He was over 14 years old in May of 1532, when his father died:

"The Inquisition Taken at Northampton in the countie of Northampton y 9th day of nouember an'o 23 H. 8 after the death of Nicholas Wodhull saith that he deceasede on the vi day of maie the xxiiith yeare of ye same Kinge, and that Anthonie Wodhull is the sonne and next heire and the vth day of may the same yeare he was of the age of xiiiite yeares and moore."[3]
"The 27 day of May. The 3d H. 8 the Kinge perdoned the Inquisicion not being taken afte the death of ffoulke Wodhull and Anne his Wife as appeereth by the perdon remaininge in the Rolls of ye Chauncarie, and it appeereth also by the leuerie of Anthonie Wodhull sued forth the 31 of H. 8, That he was the son and heir of Nicholas Wodehull sonne and heir of ffoulk sonne and heir of John sone and heire of Tho. Wodhull."[3]

Anthony married Anne Smith, the daughter of John Smith. Esq. and his wife Agnes Harewell.[1] The date and place of their marriage is unknown and the dates are estimated. They had one daughter:

  • Agnes, born 18 January 1541/2, died 20 March 1575/6, married first Richard Chetwode, Esq., and second to George Calverley, Knt.[1][2]

Anthony died on 4 February 1541/2,[1][2] when Agnes was only 17 days old.[4] His will was dated 4 February 1538/9 and was proved 11 October 1542.[1][2]

His widow married a second time to John Leveson, Esq., who died in 1549. Her third marriage was to Edward Griffin, Knt., who died 16 December 1569. Agnes predeceased her third husband,[1][2] but her date of death is unknown.

Verified that a badged trail exists between Chetwood-1 and Malet-18, but Wodhull-44 is a problem (despite the conclusion that the line to Malet-18 is ok to go through this profile with {Uncertain Existence} research box). Please add {Magna Carta Project|needs=Re-review} to the profile. The project account for the Magna Carta Project will be added as a manager later this month to meet WikiTree guidelines (see Help:Project-Managed_Profiles). In celebration of the recent 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Magna Carta Project is reviewing and enhancing all the profiles between American Gateway ancestors like Grace (Chetwood) Bulkeley, and William Malet, the Magna Carta surety from whom she descends. This profile is on the "trail" between the two and I look forward to any contributions we can make to this profile. Please let me know if you have any concerns.
