Biography

Who were Sarah Woodruff's parents? I can't find any information on Sarah's birth. On March 17, 1816 Sarah Woodruff was born in NJ, probably Bridgeton, to unknown parents.

She married Jonathan B Ayres on Jan. 1, 1840 in Delaware and their first child, Lorenzo Woodruff Ayres, was born there while the family also resided in Philadelphia in 1842.

It seems the family had close ties to the Ayres family in Delaware and may have had a residence there, as well.

In 1843, 1845 & 1847 Sarah & Jonathan would have three daughters, Jenetta, Catherine and Susannah. Jenetta & Catherine would grow to adulthood, Susannah would die within the first year of birth.

James Davis Ayres would be born in Philadelphia in 1849 and the family was listed on the 1850 census in Ward 5, Spring Garden: Jonathan B. Ayers, a blacksmith, Sarah, Lorenzo, Jenetta, Catherine & James.

More children would follow; Esther Prudence 1851, and William Stroud 1854, who would both die by 1857, Emma Lusada in 1860.

Shortly after 1860, the family would go to Smyrna, Kent, Delaware where another child, Sarah Elizabeth, would be born and die 1861-1862. The years during and immediately following the Civil War seem to have been spent in Smyrna, Delaware.

In 1870 Jonathan, Sarah and Emma Lusada, their youngest, were again living in Philadelphia in the residence of their daughter Catherine and her husband Richard Kelley, a carpenter, and four of their children: Charles, James, Jonathan & Sarah.

Jonathan, Sarah and son Lorenzo, along with his wife and several of their children are living at 2119 5th Street, Philadelphia, on the 1880 census.

January 30, 1882 Jonathan B Ayres died in Philadelphia.

21 August 1891 at her residence at 3601 Knorr Street in Philadelphia, Sarah Woodruff Ayres died of heart disease at age 75. She is buried in K of P Greenwood cemetery.
