John Woods migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Directory, by R. C. Anderson, p. 382) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
[Note: reference to 1635 arrival on the Hopewell are unconfirmed . Some sources indicate a passenger John Wood/Atwood of Plymouth, he married Sarah Masterson; other sources indicate a John Wood/Woods son of William, brother of Henry, who settled in Gloucester was one the Hopewell. There was more than one voyage in 1635.]
[ See: Jo. Woods, as passenger, age 26 on the second voyage of the Hopewell in Sept., 1635. Also on the passenger list were Elizabeth Wood, age 24 and William Wood, age 27. [1] Possible son-in-law to be John Bellows, then age 12, was on the first voyage of the Hopewell in 1635. [2] However, Anderson says there is no reason to connect this John Wood with the one who settled in Sudbury and Marlborough and married Mary Parmenter.[3]]
John Woods, born in England about 1610, and settled first in Sudbury, Massachusetts, subsequently removing to Marlborough in 1659. He deposed to be about 54 years of age in 1664. [4][5][6] It is thought that he arrived in New England aboard the ship Hopewell in 1635.
John married Mary Parmenter at Bures, St. Mary's, Suffolk England on Oct. 10, 1633. Mary was baptized about 1610, daughter of John and Bridget (___) Parminter. [7][4]
In the will of Mary's father John Parminter Sr., will dated Mar. 25, 1671 and proved July 25, 1671, he names his daughter Woods and son in law John Woods among others. [4][6]
1656: John Woods Sr., of Sudbury was one of the 13 original petitioners to the General Court for a 'plantation of eight miles square' (township of Marlborough). [8][9][10]
1656: Sept. 7: John was among those inhabitants agreeing to lay out the new Plantation, granted by the General Court, and that they should settle their individual lot in two years time. [8]
John was an original proprietor, and therefore would be in attendance at most meetings and have a vote in town affairs. The colonial record, only identifies these men as proprietor's in the majority of records, and not by individual name.
1660: Nov. 26: John Woods Sr. granted 30 acres of land. [8][9]
1660: John received lands In the first division of meadows. [8]
1662: Among the proprietor's who voted that all those having lots which are either not resided on by the family, or paid public rates, will have their land seized by the town. [8]
1663: [ 14:xj: 1662] John Woods among the three men appointed to survey the Cedar Swamp for allotment to the proprietors. [8]
1662: [3: xij: 1662] In laying out the common, and granting timber for fencing one's division, John Woods was among those appointed to settle any disputes regarding the division. [8]
1663: March 29: Appointed selectman for the ensuing year. [8][10]
His estate was inventoried on July 11, 1678, and lists an exclusion of 4 acres formerly given to son in law, Joseph Newton. The total value was listed at L303 3s 7d, with L220 being land. [11]
Mary died there on Aug. 17, 1690 at the age of 80 years. [13][7]

Wood-8268 and Woods-630 do not represent the same person because: Woods-630 had one wife, Mary Parminter married in 1633 and died in 1690 some years after John Wood's death. There is no supporting evidence he had a wife Dorothy. Dorothy/Dorcas Wood Phippen listed as his child, is listed as LNAB Wood on this profile where as Joseph Phippen's wife Dorothy's LNAB is listed as Unknown in GM V MP p. 454
Woods-630 and Woods-1698 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same people, both with Merry Kennedy as profile manager. I am cleaning up duplicates to provide a clean lineage between Samuel F. B. Morse and John Parmenter.
Wood-5998 and Woods-630 are not ready to be merged because: John and Mary Parmenter Wood did have a daughter Frances b. Sudbury 1645, but Wood-5998 has a marriage date of 1671- unsourced - which would not be correct for this couple. Needs correction.
John Woods married Mary Parmenter and had son Isaac; see http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Woods-630. This spouse in incorrect. I will probably remove her for merging purposes but thought I'd give you a heads up in case you have a different John Woods m. to Mary Maynard? Chris
Does anyone have a more specific reference for 'Roman, Ancestry of Whitney' I'm not able to find it?
