Biography

Edmund Wood was born about 1550 in Halifax, England.[1][2]It is possible he was the son of Richard Wood, mother's name not given.[3]He lived in the Shelf-Northowram area of Yorkshire.[2]

The name of Edmund Wood's wife is not known. They had the following children:[1]

Children of Edmund Sr & unknown wife:

  1. Edmund Jr. born in Bingley and baptized at Keighley on March 2, 1571/2. He probably married first before February 9, 1600 to an unknown wife. He married probably (2nd) to Martha Lum (Lome) at Halifax on May 21, 1611.[1]Children were Martha, Jonas, Susan, Jeremiah, Timothy. [2][4]
  2. Richard Wood was baptized at Halifax on February 10, 1576/7. No further information found.[1]
  3. John Wood was baptized on March 22, 1583/4 at Halifax and died between May 27, 1618 (date of will) and May 3 1619 when his will was filed. His death probably occurred at Shelf, where he lived. He had married Dorothy Moakson at Halifax on December 30, 1609.[1] When his children were baptized at Halifax, he is listed as a resident of Shelf. Mentioned in will are children: Susan, John, Mary; and appointed as executors and his children's tutors were Edmond Wood and his brother-in-law Matthew Mitchell[2][1]
  4. Susan (Wood) Butterfield Mitchell born about 1590. Married about 1611 to Thomas Butterfield who died about July 3, 1516. She married 2nd Matthew Mitchell at Halifax on August 21, 1616. Children: Samuel Butterfield, unnamed Butterfield, Abigail Mitchell, David Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell, Martha Mitchell, Jonathan Mitchell, Susan Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Hannah Mitchell.[2][5]Susan died after June 1631, the birth of her last known child.[1]

Research Note

Research Note #1: Research Note 1: The NYGBR article "English Origins of the Mitchell, Wood, Lum and Halstead Families," - speaking of Edmund Wood Sr, the father of Edmund Wood the emigrant says: research shows there actually were two or possibly even three men with the name "Edmund (Edmond) Wood" who lived in England, the same vicinity, the same time. Genealogical confusion/conflation has resulted.

Research Note #2: Previously three women were attached as wives to this Edmond Wood: (1) Alyce Edwards from whom no children were born. (2) Jenet or Janet Hurst who was thought to be the mother of John Wood. (3) Margret Heard (Heird) who was thought to be the mother of Edmund Jr. and Susan (Wood) Butterfield Mitchell. These three women have been detached as wives since the published research of Louis G. Ogden and Brent M. Owen in "Revisiting the Stamford Pioneers of Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, West Riding, England" in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 151 in October of 2020.[1]

Could we please remove the source titled: Jeffrey Hause. "Wood Genealogy"? I have never found any contact info for the author of this, but there are many inaccuracies on this page and it has run amok on peoples tree. Specifically that Jeffery has Joseph Wood m. Eunice Jarvis as a son of Jeremiah Wood b. 1620. This is incorrect. Jeffery goes on to present descendants of Joseph and Eunice. Joseph Wood who married Eunice Jarvis has been shown to be the son of Jonas "Halifax" Wood - an unrelated Wood family. It has lead to many false connections between these two Wood lines.

In my previous comment regarding the Ydna study, I am attempting to find a living male descendant from the Jonas "Halifax" Wood line to settle the age old question of if Jonas "Halifax" was related to the Edmund Wood family. I've come very close, but the third party who is trying to facilitate the test has not had success yet.

Bob, Soon I will add a note about the source by Jeffrey Hause regarding inaccuracies. I don’t want to delete it entirely because someone will invariably come along and add it, thinking the source had been overlooked. My computer is being fixed, so can’t do it immediately.
My name is Janet Wood and I have researched the family of Edmund Wood Sr. and more specifically Edmund Wood Jr. for decades. I know many of the branches intimately! My husband descends from Edmund Wood as proven by Ydna study but I have yet to fill in the gaps from his EKA; John Wood b. 1774 of Hempstead NY back to one of Edmunds sons; Jonas, Jeremiah or Timothy. Myself and a group of fellow Edmund Wood descendants are currently involved in a Y700 DNA study project on FTDNA website that is specific to male descendants of Edmund. We have just over 20 at this time and we have identified the Ydna haplogroup and several downstream haplogroups of Edmund. Unfortunately I cannot link that Ydna test to Edmund because of the gaps in my paper trail tree. I would encourage anyone who has a living male Wood in their family who thinks they are from the Edmund Wood family to contact me if they would like to Ydna test and join our project. Edmund Jr is haplogroup I-M253 and more specifically I-FT384752. We have one participant who appears to be a descendant of Edmund Wood Sr. or further up stream because this mans lineage is from Ireland in the 1800's and then direct to Canada (still there). He has tested positive for I-FT384752. It would seem that an upstream or lateral Wood man related to Edmund Wood had a descendant who left England for Ireland pre 1800 (not uncommon).

Janet and Bob: I too am a direct descendant of Edmund Wood, Sr., on paper. My 100 year old father had his DNA collected at age 96. We are descended through his daughter Susan (Wood) Butterfield Mitchell.
In 2020 NYG&BR publshed further information Edmund. It shows he had only 1 (unnamed) wife who died in 1598/9. I propose that we update his bio with this new information.

Do any profile managers have a concern with me doing so?

Sharon, thank you for kindly emailing me a copy of three pages from the NYGBR article that are pertinent to this profile; my 11th ggrandfather.

Noting no objecting comments from the other Profile Managers, I will proceed to update this profile using this later research from NYGBR article you provided.

This profile has been updated....

I believe I have completely updated all the profiles affected... wives/children, etc.

August 20, 2017. I removed Richard Wood-8387 and Margaret Ambler-8387 as parents of Edmund Wood-5596. No evidence was found that they were his parents.

Cheryl

Carole or Tom, if you have any comments about this profile, please see the g2g that I began.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/447067 Thanks so much. Cheryl

Wood-15155 and Wood-5596 appear to represent the same person because: change typo DOB to 1546. Since the marriage date to Janet Hurst is in the bio, I believe these two should be merged as they represent the same person.
Hi Shelly,

I believe this profile and the profile of Edmund Wood-5596 should be merged. Someone along the way may have made a typo here, the DOB should be 1546, NOT 1646. Edmund Wood married Janet (Jenet) Hurst on May 4, 1573 - this date of marriage is here, on this profile as well as on the profile Edmund Wood-5596. Please change DOB and merge the two profiles. thank you.

merges complete.

I will work on the bio/sources/citations for Wood-5596. Cheryl

merge of Wood-12860 into Wood-5596 complete.

I will now merge Woods-4043 into Wood-5596. Lower number into higher because wrong LNAB on Woods-4043. See g2g here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/363323/any-reason-to-refrain-from-merging-edmund-wood?show=363323#q363323

I plan to merge Edmund Wood-12860 into Wood-5596. Then into Edmund Wood-4043. Are there any reservations to my proceeding?
Has anyone noticed that this Edmond, son of Richard.....is the brother of Edmond sr.?? So did the first one die and his parents had named a different son the same name???? Just saying..........
posted by Lisa Manis
Wood-5596 and Wood-12860 are not ready to be merged because: I am researching the families of Wood, Mitchell, Lome, and others in New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (NYGBR). I would like to postpone merges at the present time. Thank you.
Wood-5596 and Wood-12860 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to match well enough to merge. I would imagine your two "Janets" were actually one person, and should be merged, too, making note of alternative surname--?
