Biography

Anthony was born about 1657 in Derbyshire, England.[1]

He died, 16 Mar 1730, in Monmouth County, New Jersey.


1668 On 13 May (month 3), Hannah, daughter of Thomas Fouke was, born. Her birth was registered at the North Wingfield parish and the Chesterfield [Quaker] Meeting in Derbyshire, England.

1657 Anthony Woodward was born 12 December to father Anthony in Ashford-in-the-water, Derbyshire, England.

1665 On 3 September, a justice of the peace took the names of Quakers at a meeting at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, England, and ordered them to appear at Chesterfield on 14 September. Thirteen of them including Anthony Woodward, perhaps the father of this Anthony, were kept at the house of corrections for about three weeks.

1670 At a Quaker meeting held at the house of Anthony Bunting, in Derbyshire, England, fines were levied on several people including £21 for Anthony Woodward, perhaps the father of this Anthony.

1679/80 On 19 February, Anthony Woodward and Dorothy Taylor were married in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Anthony and Anne Woodward were the first witnesses listed.

1686/87 On 6 of month 11, at the Chesterfield monthly meeting [New Jersey], "Anthony Woodward late of Long Island and Hannah Folkes, declared their intentions of marriage to the Man's and women's meetings her parents being present gave their consent and he produced a certificate from friends in Long Island of his clearness from all others and of his faithfull walking".

1686/87 On 3 February, Hannah Folkes [Foulke] and Anthony Woodward made their second declaration of intention to marry, as recorded in the Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey monthly meeting minutes. He was found clear, but Hannah was not cleared, but they got married, despite the desire of the meeting for them to wait one month longer.

1686/87 On 14 of month 12 (February), Anthony Woodward, late of Long Island, now of West New Jersey, and Hannah Folkes, dau. of Thomas, were married [12]. Witnesses: Thomas, Thomas, Jr., Folkes, Samuel Bunting, John Bunting, Wm. Wood, William Biddle, John Curtis, Joseph Hutchinson and others. [13] Anthony Woodward and Hannah Foulkes may have known each other in England and she may have had a prior interest in John Hooten, which affected her clearness to marry.

1686 Thomas Foulke Sr sold 200 acres to Anthony Woodward, both yeomen of Chesterfield.

1688 On 20 of month 1, Mary, daughter of Anthony and Hannah Woodward, was born. She died on 13 of month 7, 1688.

1688-9 January 22, Thomas Folke senior sold land to Anthony Woodward, both of Chesterfield, yeomen, for 200 acres near there, bo't of Mahlon Stacy, then of Handsworth, York, England, Jan. 28-29, 1677-8.

1692 Anthony Woodward signed a letter with other Quakers at Burlington encouraging George Keith and Thomas Lloyd to resolve their differences.

1695 On 1 month [March], day 25, Anthony Woodward was listed among the residents of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County.

1696 Anthony Woodward was appointed constable of Nottingham Twp.

1698 Anthony Woodward purchased the Dockwra estate of William Dockwra.

1701/02 On 13 January, Richard French and Mary King were married at the house of Harmenus King, Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by Anthony and Hannah Woodward and others.

1702 A debt was paid to Anthony Wotherd, perhaps this one, from the estate of Francis Parot.

1706 On 13 November, John King and Elizabeth Woodward were married at Chesterfield. Witnessed by Anthony and Hannah Woodward and others.

1709 On January 23, Anthony Woodward was commissioned as justice of the peace in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

1704 On 8 August, William Murfin and Sarah Bunting were married at Chesterfield. Witnessed by Anthony and Elizabeth Woodward and others.

1706 On 13 November, John King and Elizabeth Woodward were married at Chesterfield. Witnessed by Anthony and Hannah Woodward and others.

1718 The will of Woodward Anthony of Freehold, Monmouth County was dated Dec 29, 1718 and proved March 26 1730. Wife Hannah sole executrix. Children Thomas, John, Anthony, William, Joseph, Samuel, Elizabeth King, Mary Maltsby, Clemens, and Sarah. Real and personal estate. Witnesses Thomas Wood, Elizabeth Daws, Joseph Reckless.

1729/30 On March 23, the inventory of the personal estate made by Benjamin Doughty, Joseph Reckless, John Bunting, and Edm’d Beakes was valued at 531.10.6 pounds inclding 6 silver spoons 6.

1756 The will of Hannah Woodward of Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, widow of Anthony, was dated 21 Aug 1756 and was proved 30 September 1760. Sons Thomas, Anthony, and Joseph, who has wife Hannah, and children Anne Reckless, Joseph and Appollo. Legacy for use of Poor Women, and Friends of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting. Real and personal estate, including deceased husband’s estate in Great Britain and 5 negroes. Executors William Lawrie, Joseph Fowler, and Rebekah Terry.

1756 The inventory dated 29 September was valued at 235.17.6 pounds including bonds, 110 pounds; 2 negro boys and 3 negro girls, 110 pounds; made by William Lawrie and Joseph Fowler.
