Stephen Woodward and Elizabeth Cockhead were married on 27th October 1799 at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough.[2]
They were both of the parish and married by banns. Neither could write so both made their mark on the register. The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Woodward and William Reeve.
Stephen and Elizabeth had four children. Only one, their first-born Jane survived past early childhood. 1807 was a tragic year for Stephen who had to endure the death of eldest son in June, his wife in October and his youngest son just 5 weeks after his wife.
Marriage 2
Just 8 months after the death of his first wife, Stephen Woodward married Martha Wall. The wedding took place after banns at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough on 5th June 1808. [3]. Stephen was of the parish, whilst Martha was from Bladon (on the banns it states that she was from Ensington). Stephen made his mark with a cross on the register, whilst Martha signed her own name. The witnesses to the marriage were Ann Bainton and Jane North.
Stephen and Martha appear to have had only one child. Martha died in 1835.
Marriage 3
Two years after the death of his second wife, Stephen Woodward married Mary Holtom on 16th August 1837 at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough.[4] They were both of the parish and married by licence. Stephen was a widower, a farmer and the son of John, a woodman. Mary was a widow, whose father was John Prickett, a farmer. Both signed their own names on the register and the witnesses to the marriage were William Hudson and Matilda Prickett. [5]
