Research Notes

The identification of John Woodward with the William Woodward registered in Headington registration district in Oct-Dec quarter of 1890 is based on: (a) mother's maiden name; (b) being close to the right age; (c) there being no better candidate. Such a direct inconsistency between the name registered and the name used in later life is unusual. It may be due to the circumstances of the registration of his birth.
