Tryon j Woodward of St. Louis Missouri also mentioned as heir-at-law in the probate of of Nancy A Tryon Wilson in a document dated 23 May 1879
Named as an heir-at-law to Josiah Tryon in 1886.
Married Anna Geyer (b Cincinnati, OH) in 1863. Children:
"The following Monday, November 12 [1883] Governor Crittenden [of Missouri] appointed Tryon J. Woodward to the board. Woodward was born in Buffalo, New York. The Woodward family moved to St. Louis when Tryon was a boy. He later graduated from McKendree College in Illinois. Woodward had been a clerk in the commissioner of supplies for the city of St. Louis and Mayor Ewing's brother was appointed to his post, and he was once a member of the Democratic Central Committee. The new commissioner's first name, Tryon, was given him by his mother, a lineal descendant of Governor Tryon, the first governor of New York. Woodward was the thirteenth person Governor Crittenden had appointed to the Board of Police Commissioners in three years." There is considerably more information about Tryon Woodward's time as a police commissioner of St. Louis in the reference.[1]
Note for those less familiar with Tryon genealogy: Many Tryons were aware of the Colonial Governor Tryon and either believed they were, or made claim to be, his lineal descendants; this is not the case.
Tryon J. Woodward, 76, father of Edward D. Woodward, Cincinnati investment broker, died in St. Louis, Mo., Friday, according to word received in this city yesterday. Funeral services will be held in Cincinnati Monday at 9?:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Jackock's establishment, 2512 Gilbert avenue. Interment will be in a family lot in Spring Grove Cemetery. The deceased was well known in political circles in St. Louis. At one time he was Police Commissioner of the city. He retired from active life several years ago.[2]
In 1860 census living in household of Robert Charles aged 41 from Wales. Wife of Robert Charles is Mary A. Charles aged 29 born Canada. A Mary Woodward b abt 1830 NY appears in the household with Tryon Woodward in 1850. May be Tryon Woodward's sister and also the Mary A. Charles named as heir-at-law to Josiah Tryon. Other people in the 1850 census in the same household have a variety of names and none is clearly identifiable as the mother of Tryon and Mary. The head of house per 1850 census is E M Jones, identified as Edwin May Jones. Thus far no connection has been established.
From the description in Wagner, it would appear that Tryon J. Woodward's mother was a Tryon -- but who?
In 1850, census there are also two young Woodward children, Sybil and William. I conjecture their parents have died by 1850 and they are younger siblings of Tryon J Woodward and Mary Woodward or niece and nephew of these siblings.
In the 1912, 1913 and 1914 Cincinnati City Directories Tryon J. Woodward is living at 2701 Burnet Avenue.[3] He appears in the 1870 New Orleans Directory, but only as a business: Morrison & Woodward.
Findagrave identifies parents as Joshua Woodward; and Alma Unknown. This is not verified, no source is given. Perhaps it is a clue, or perhaps a wrong number.
