Mary was the daughter and only child of Chiffonette LeGrass Tryon, who died a few days after Mary's birth, and Henry Woodward. She, along with her surviving half-siblings and step-mother were baptized together in 1832 a short time before her father's death. After her father died she lived with her step-mother and half-sisters. Only Elizabeth survived her. Her half-sister Ellen Maria was appointed her executrix, but died before completing probate, after which Henry Woodward (a cousin?) completed the work.
