John Woodward was born in England.
John Woodward came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

John Woodward was born on 2 November 1823 in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England. He was the son of James Woodward and Jane Hall.[1] He passed away on 16 August 1862 in Gerringong, New South Wales, Australia.

John married three times:

  1. Elizabeth Clarke, on 31 July 1847[2]
  2. Mary Giles, on 29 Sep 1851[3]
  3. Ann Bond, in April 1859[4]

When John was 23 he married Elizabeth Clarke on 31 July 1847 in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England.[5] His wife Elizabeth died in November 1858, aged 19.

In the 1851 census John (age 27) was living in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England. He was listed as a labourer, living with his mother-in-law Mary Clarke, widow, field labourer, and her children.[1]

When John was 27 he married Mary Giles on 29 September 1851 in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England.[6] His wife Mary died in February 1853.

When John was 35 he married Ann Robbins nee Bond on 4 June 1859 in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England. Their marriage certificate had the information that they were widower and widow, both living at Longborough, both aged 35, John was a labourer, and his father's name was John Woodward, a labourer, and Ann's father was Thomas Bond, a labourer. Witnesses were Samuel Clarke and Elizabeth Woodward.[7] Ann had three children from an earlier marriage. John and Ann will have 2 children: Harriett Woodward and Henry Daniel Woodward.[8][9]

John and Ann and their family arrived at New South Wales on 13 April 1860 on the ship Dirigo.[10]

John died at the age of 38 on 16 August 1862 in Kiama, NSW, Australia.[11]

Research Notes

Some trees have "John Menchin Woodward" for his name. Has anyone seen a primary record with his middle name "Menchin"?
