Note: He enlisted in the Civil War June 25, 1861. He listed Utica, Illinois as his mailing address, but served with company I, 8th regiment Missouri volunteers. He served until 1864 as a private. he was with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was mustered out July 2, 1864 at St. Louis, Missouri. His serial number was 59078.
"He left home as was gone for several years, prospecting in the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and Alaska, leaving his wife and family of 15 children behind. After an absence of 16 years, he sent a letter containing one thousand dollars to his wife and was not heard from again until he suddenly appeared in Decatur, Illinois, at the home of his daughter, a few months before his death, blind and destitute; somehow he had made his way from Alaska and Seattle alone to his daughter's home."
He may have been born in Fairplay, Greene County, Indiana.
