Biography

Nancy Adelia Woodworth was born 8 August 1802, daughter of Samuel Woodworth and Lovina Babcock.[1] Her birthplace is unknown. She may have been born in Lebanon, Connecticut, where her father was living in the 1800 Census, or alternatively in New York where the family had moved by 1804.[2][3]

Nancy Adelia Woodworth was married to John Mitchell in Mehoopany, Luzerne (later Wyoming) County, Pennsylvania on 1 July 1818.[4] They settled first in Owego, Tioga County, New York, then moved by 1821 to Lisle, Broome County, New York.[4] They had nine children, the first born in Owego and the rest in Lisle.

Nancy died in Lisle on 23 June 1834, one week after the birth of her last child.[4] In the words of son Samuel Mitchell, "it was a sad time, the oldest being but fifteen years of age. There is no event more clearly engraved upon my mind than that death-bed scene. I look back upon my mother with a feeling that she was something almost more than human. To my memory (I was but fourteen years of age) she seemed most amiable, the most beautiful of any women I ever saw. She was MOTHER."[4] She was buried at Lisle Village Cemetery, Section 5, Lot 22.[5]

  2. On page 14, the Woodworth genealogy shows Lebanon, Connecticut, as the birthplace for the last five of Samuel's children, starting with Nancy. Census and other records prove this is incorrect for the children from Almon (born 7 July 1804) through James (born 24 April 1813), who were all born in New York. On page 26, the Woodworth genealogy contradicts itself and says Nancy was born in Columbia, Connecticut.
  3. In the 1880 Census, Nancy's children are equally conflicted about her birthplace. Two sons say she was born in New York, one daughter says Connecticut, one daughter says Massachusetts, and one daughter and a son say England, which is actually where their father was born. The three surviving children at the 1900 Census all say their mother was born in New York.
