Miles was born in De Ruyter, New York. to William Bradford Woolley and Catherine Courtright, The only son, he had two sisters, one older and one younger. A Civil War Veteran, he fought for the Union, serving in the 75th Illinois Infantry. He was injured during his service and began receiving a veterans pension in January 1863. After marrying Ellen Stone when he was 26 years old, they moved to help settle the community of Yankton in Dakota Territory and they had six children together. Miles died from further wounds and hypothermia while he was living at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Injured, or taken ill, on August 10, he died on August 11, 1892.
