Research Notes

Ralph Wooten's story Posted 09 Feb 2018 by kayesewardrn "George Wooten was born in Orange County, VA in 1695. He was the third of four sons born to Richard Wooten II and Maryann Sandiver.

Prior to 1715 he married Elizabeth Reynolds in Orange County Virginia. Her birth date and parents are unknown. Together George and Elizabeth had four sons; Thomas (1715-1796), Daniel (1718-1790), John (1719-aft1812), and James (1725-1788). Although all four sons were born in Orange County, VA, it appears that none of them died there. This seems to be the line that left Virginia for other colonies. It is known that George Wooten and Elizabeth Reynolds stayed and eventually died in Virginia. Why their four sons left is unknown considering it appears that George had a stable life in Virginia. We know he had leased at least 100 acres of land on the south side of the Rapidan River for an annual quilt rent of 630 lbs of Tobacco as of August 29, 1741.(Orange County, VA deed bk 5 pgs69-73) Whether he still had it in his possession at the time of his death between 1761 and 1765 is unknown. What is known is that his four sons had all joined the Granville County Militia by 1754. (Granville County Militia 1754 Muster Roll) As a result it is likely that all four were called up for service in the French and Indian War. One of his grandsons by Thomas, a young man also named George, also served alongside his father and uncles. George senior died in York, Orange Co., Virginia sometime between 1761 and 1765.

The areas of settlement and subsequent lives for his sons were as follows: (It appears all of the brothers settled together in NC for a time)

Thomas - married Susannah in 1735 in Orange County Virginia. He and Susannah had 10 children. Six were born in Virginia; Jeremiah b. 1736, George b. 1737, Caleb b. 1739, John b. 1742, Thomas b. 1746, and Richard (1748-1808). Sometime after 1748 the family moved to Bute Co. NC where their seventh son Absalom was born in 1750. They again relocated to Surry Co. NC where their last children and only daughters were born; Mary b. 1756, Rachel (1762-1800), and Elizabeth b. 1766.

Daniel- married Mary in Virginia around 1734. They relocated to South Carolina. His story is told under his profile.

John - married another Elizabeth Reynolds in 1740 probably in VA. The birth location of their first three children is not recorded but it guessed to have been Virginia considering it doesn't appear that the family moved prior to 1749 or 1750. These children are Mary b 1741, Aaron b. unknown, and Abram b. unknown. By 1750 the family had relocated to Granville Co. NC and his next three children were born either there or in Cumberland Co. These children were Joab b. 1750, Frederick b. 1751, and Jacob b. 1755. John served in the militia around 1754. However, by 1761 he was in some sort of trouble with the law and he was forced to leave Cumberland county before the "sheriff picked him up". His own brother Daniel was the county constable at the time. It appears that from here he moved to Edgefield, SC where he and his first wife had three more children; Elias b. 1769, Priscilla b. 1770, and Daniel b. 1773. Around 1773 or 4 Elizabeth died and John married Nelly Yielding in 1775. They had two sons; William 1775 and John 1776- 1851or60). In total John Sr. had 11 children. John died in Edgefield Co. SC sometime after 1812.

James- was b. in Virginia and served in the Granville Co. Militia regiment in 1754. He probably relocated to NC with is brothers in 1750. No spouse or children are known and he died in Franklin Co. NC in 1788."
