Biography

JOHN LOUIS WORDEN JR. John Louis Worden Jr. was born on January 21, 1927 in San Diego, and passed away peacefully at Enloe Hospital on January 19, 2014, after a prolonged illness. He was 86 years old. He graduated from Hoover High School in San Diego as valedictorian of his class in June, 1944. He is a World War II Army veteran, and he served as part of the American force liberating Korea from the Japanese. After his military service, he completed a bachelor's degree at the University of California at Berkeley. John married Marcia Blalock at her family home in Redding in 1952. They resided in San Diego while John worked as an accountant in his father's accountancy practice, and earned a master's degree in English from San Diego State. The Worden family relocated to Chico in 1967, where John joined the English Department at Chico State. John received his Ph. D. in English from the University of Southern California in 1971, and continued teaching at Chico State until his retirement in 1983. During his retirement years, John and Marcia enjoyed travel, spending time with their grand-children, and supporting others in the field of education. John was a founder and ongoing supporter of Nord Country School, located in the community of Nord. Service to others was one of John's deepest satisfactions. John is survived by Marcia, his wife of 61 years, his daughter Linda Worden Webber (Craig) of Boise, Idaho, his daughter Sylvia Worden of Huntington Beach, and his son Ira Worden (Anne-Marie) of Kirkland, Washington. His grandchildren are Rachel, Eleanor and Jonathan Webber of Boise, and Ira Bigelow and Anabel Worden of Huntington Beach.
