Biography

Roger Worden was born of poor but respectable parents in the town of Greenwich, CT on the 22nd day of February in the year 1748. At the age of seven he had the misfortune to lose his father, and his mother, who with very humble means was left with several children to provide for availed herself of an opportunity to put Roger into the family of a friend and neighbor, Mr. Mead, who was deacon of the church in the place to which both she and her deceased husband belonged.

As early as 1760, Roger became a Universalist by constant study of the Scriptures.

At the age of 14 or 15 Roger was put to the trade of shoemaker with Mr. Holmes, also a member of the church.

Roger married Rachel, daughter of Deacon Rundell. They had two sons, one whom died some years ago, and the other on the death of his mother went to live with an uncle in a distant part of the country, and is now unknown to the surviving part of the family. The date of death of Rachel Rundell is unknown.

Roger married second Mary Wood as early as 1775/76 and by her he had four children, 3 daughters and a son. They were married more than 60 years. The son left home at age 19 or 20, and was supposedly lost at sea.

In the autumn of 1791, Roger came to New York City to live out the remainder of his days. Mary Wood died Oct. 8, 1837, he outliving her. One of Roger's daughters, then unmarried, lived with her father, taking care of him to his end. Roger died Jan. 26, 1843 at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 4 days.
