  • Sylvester Worden (son of *Peter Worden IV and Rebecca Richmond) was born Bef. 1732 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island, and died April 30, 1814 in Halifax, Windham Co., Vermont. He married Rebecca Eccleston/Eggleston in 1757 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island.

Includes Notes for *Sylvester Worden: On 21 Feb. 1761 Sylvester Worden of Prestonland purchased land in Stonington, CT. from Thomas Main Jr. for 45 pounds; land was located in the North Society of Stonington, 3/4 acre with saw mill and dam on the country road, deed witnessed by Gershom Mott and Sarah Main. Sylvester was admitted freeman in Stonington in 1775 and in 1777 he purchased land in Groton, CT. which he sold to Squire Lee in 1780.

There are several land records for Sylvester Worden recorded in Hallifax, VT. Volumes 1-10. Recorded 27 July, 1791 - Sylvester Worden for the sum of 71 pounds sold land to his son Peter; land was located in Halifax and was originally laid out for Peter Graves - Witnesses Rebecca & Elisha Worden. Recorded 12 September, 1792 - Sylvester Worden quit-claimed land in Halifax to Benjamin Wilcox; part of original lot #13 bound westerly by property of Elijah Clark, northerly by Tyler Wilcox and south by Sylvester's own property Recorded 21 August, 1799 - Sylvester Worden "in consideration of love, affection and good will" for his son Elisha Worden, granted Elisha five acres of land in Halifax, witnessed by Samuel & Ruth Worden.

On 14 March, 1801, Sylvester Worden granted land to his son Peter for same reasons given in above deed. This land lately belonged to William Gault, lately deceased and bordered on land belonging to Benj. Weeks, Tabor Willcox, Allen Pierce and Peter's own land - witnesses: Asa Worden, Samuel Worden.

On 14 March 1801, Sylvester Worden made a similar grant to his son Asa Worden, witnessed by Samuel and Peter Worden.

On May 21, 1812, Sylvester Worden sold land to Samuel Worden for $1000; land was part of original lots 30/31 bounded on west by Elisha Worden, North & East by land of Peter Worden & South by land of Samuel Worden. This land consisted of "all the land I own and farm on which I now Live."Samuel Worden, in this deed, agreed to care for Sylvester & Rebecca Worden for the remainder of their lives; witnessed by Darius Bullock Sr. & Jr. and recorded 21 May 1812.

In 1790 Windham Co. VT, Town of Halifax census, Sylvester is listed as Sylvaneous in error and his household consisted of 3 white males over 16; 2 white males under 16 and 4 females. The 1800 census listing for Town of Halifax lists 1 male 16-20; 1 male 45 & over, 2 females 26-45 & 1 female 45 & over.

Sylvester and his wife are buried in the Worden Cemetery at Halifax, Vermont but their gravestones no longer mark their graves. They were stolen from their site many years ago but fortunately the inscriptions were copied by family members before this happened. The stones read "In memory of Mr. Sylvester, who died Apr. 30, 1814 AE 82". Rebekah's stone read "Widow Rebekah, wife of SYLVESTER WORDEN, died Nov. 6, 1827, aged 88 years.

In Dec. of 1817, the estate of Ichabod Eccleston of North Stonington, VT. was distributed to his siblings. Rebekah Worden was named as one of his sisters. Rebekah Worden of Halifax VT. signed a receipt for her share of the estate on 24 Dec. 1817. Rebekah sold her share to Lewis Main in 1818 in North Stonington.
