Biography

Anne Worden was born August 19, 1769 in Hopkinton, Kings, Rhode Island. She was a daughter of William Worden and Mary Byrnes.[1]

She married Gardner Worden[2] on March 3, 1793. [3]

Research Notes

Note: Nancy "Ann" Worden (1769-1834) married her second cousin once removed, Gardner Worden (1760-1837). The most recent common ancestor was Dr. Samuel Worden (1646-1716) because Gardners' Samuel Worden (1672) and Marys' Isaac Worden (1673) were brothers.

Reference is made to William W. Worden of Stonington and Mary Byrnes of Portsmouth, married Oct. 4, 1761. They had Mary b: May 20, 1766; Sarah b: Sep. 10, 1767; Ann (or Nancy) b: Aug. 19, 1769. His Will approved Jan. 10, 1791 names wife Mary, and sons Ebenezer, William, Isaac, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Walter; daughters Mary probably married Lebbeus Coon, Sarah married a Kenyon, and Ann married Gardner Worden. Recorded at Hopkinton, Rhode Island.

Hi, Bill -

And welcome again to the list (I welcomed you in a private note when you subscribed yesterday).

Interesting that your family is from central New York, and my dad's wasn't too far away from there, and I wonder if we have a connection since that "Elwin" name shows up in my grandfather's name - he was Wilson Elwin Worden.

In a recent note from Pat Warden in Florida, she lined out my family back to Peter I who came from Lancashire, England to East Dennis on Cape Cod, Massachusetts at some point between 1623 and 1636 (does anyone have an actual ship list or date for him and his family yet?), from whom it seems that so many of the US Wordens/Wardens/Wordins/Werdens come. Spelling wasn't "fixed" till fairly late in the last century, so it is not unusual to find various spellings of the same name for someone, or to find that someone used various spellings him- or herself.

My line, then, is:

Wilson Elwin was born 1Sep. 1861. Died in 1948 and buried in Angelica cemetery in Allegany Co., NY. Father was John Patent was born 1 May, 1826 Watch Hill, RI. Died 26 March 1908 and is buried in Angelica cemetery. Married Susan P. Barber and Emogenen Clark.

His father was Gardner, born 6 Jan. 1794, died 4 April 1857 in Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. Was married to Ester Prosser on 9 June 1815 in Hopkinton, Washington Co., RI.

His father was Gardner born 1774 in Charleston, Washington Co., RI, died 1837. Married Nancy Worden ( see next paragraph) on 3 March 1793, and Lucy Phinney 3 Jan. 1830. His father was Christopher ( then back through these fathers: Jeremiah, Samuel, Samuel, Peter II, Peter I) (see website)

Nancy was born 19 Aug. 1769 in Washington Co. RI. Her line (William, Isaac, Samuel, Peter II, Peter I) (See website) Therefore I have a double Worden line.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nancy by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nancy:
