Jacob and Eliza Stumbo Wortman went to Oregon on the Oregon trail. They left Council Bluffs, Iowa in the spring of 1852. Also on the train were Eliza's brother David, his wife Catherine and their two sons; Eliza's sister Caroline Stumbo Niday, her husband Hiram and their four daughters and a neice of Eliza, Melvina Rebecca Baker, daughter of Margeret W. Stumbo Baker. David, Catherine and one of their sons died on the trip. It is also thought that three of Hiram and Caroline's daughters died on the trip.
Jacob and his grandson John started the First National Bank of McMinnville in 1883. The bank remained in the family until 1983 when it was sold to Key Bank. (Letter Dorothy Wortman Gunness 6/11/97).
