Biography

John William Workman or Jan Willemsz Woertman is assumed to have died in Amsterdam, Holland, some time before the year 1647. Little is known of him except that he was married and had a family. It is believed that he was an emigrant from England, coming to Holland as a result of religious persecution during the time of the Puritan upheavals. Son Dirck according the source used here was son Richard (so Dirck Janse =Richard son of John ? )[2]
Note: This really doesn't make a lot of sence...Richard = Dirk, and Dirk Janse is Richard son of John ?? To me looks more like just adjusting names and stuff to just make things match ? (to make the children fit the in fact just wrong parents)Timmerman-225 19:25, 13 June 2016 (EDT)
In Holland, John or Jan, seemingly integrated into the social and religious way of life of the people there and his family adopted their customs completely so that during the time of their emigrations they were known mainly as sons, daughters, or wife of John. In church records the patronymic pattern was followed almost completely so that John's son, Richard, is recorded as Dirck Jansen very frequently. As early as the year 1628, Jans William Woertman had married Harmtje Jans ? (Hannah, an unusual name among the Dutch) and they were the parents of at least three children born in Amsterdam, Holland.[2]

Uncertain because: No mother or last name mentioned so could be a different guy of course ...
Baptism Twin, Dirk and Anneken Woertman, 7 December 1631, Amsterdam kind: Dirk en Anneken kerk: Evangelisch Luthers: boek 139; vader: Jan Woertman [11] See the witnesses and the name Harman, which could indicate Harman maybe was the grandfather...which could mean Harmtje was daughter of Harman and the above found marriage is indeed correct and Harmtje maybe after the death of her husband and emigration just adopted her husbands first name as her patronymic -last name , but it could also mean these just all are totally different people or maybe Jan later married Harmtie Jans ? Timmerman-225 10:18, 5 August 2016 (EDT)
3. kind: Annetie doopdatum: 23-02-1662 kerk: Lutherse Kerk godsdienst: Evangelisch-Luthers vader: Woertman, Jan moeder: Waertmans, Annetie [12]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jan Willemsz by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jan Willemsz:

Woertman-9 and Woertman-68 appear to represent the same person because: Pretty sure the same person. Looks like someone moved his child to this profile leaving #68 unconnected to the wikitree.

This is just a caveat for anyone wanting good info on the Woertmans. Any discussion of this family should start with the 2001 article in the NYGBR by Barbara Barth. Become a member of the NYGBS and you'll find many good articles on early NY Dutch families. This article and information in it is mentioned and used in other places on the web, by the way. The Workman connection doesn't have any credibility. Very vague, no sources to support the claims, very flawed reasoning.

Hi ,

Added an image of the baptism of the twin, noticed one interesting witness there: Maybe it was Trijntje Jonas ? She was a midwife and also emigrated to New Netherland, and there is a Harman mentioned, maybe the grandfather ? This could also mean the marriage of Jan Willemsz and Jannetje Harmans is correct . But this also would mean that either this Jannetje Harmans changed her name when she emigrated to Harmtie Jans or this is just a totally different couple or..Jan later married Harmtie Jans and she was the stephmother of Dirk, which could explain why it is not really very clear and mentioned she was his mother ?

Hi,

All duplicates are merged now, hope it's ok , will look for some records again tomorrow, maybe a Birthrecord for the Jan Willemss can be found .. or the Jan Woertman

posted by Bea (Timmerman) Wijma
Nicholas Woertman and Julyann Gyllian were added as possible parents...they weren't this persons parents so they now are removed.

The duplicate had parents William Workman and Elizabeth Cocks as supposed parents which also were incorrect. (no proof for any parents, so his parents in fact were unknown. so the supposed parents all are removed now .

It's this Joseph http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9686581/family/pedigree He was also a patriot. A yDNA descendant of Joseph's has a haplogroup of I-M253 which is Viking.

The theory that he was German is likely based on the fact that he used a Lutheran church in the Netherlands.

I can't find any reference to a Joseph Workman b.c. 1736 as a descendant.

There is a Joseph b 1750 in Roxbury, Morris, N.J. which is a relative.

Neither source I have indicate that his roots are German, I have heard that way back in time the Workman's were from France and were possibly Huguenots.

Workman-1606 and Workman-876 do not represent the same person because: Proposed merge is into Woertman-9 for both Workman-1606 and Workman-876

Hi all,

This is the only marriage in Amsterdam that is the closest match to both and the year of marriage mentioned in the Bio (So a woman named Jannetje Harmans and a man named Jan Willemss (= Willemsz) Willem as a patronymic , so father was named Willem (or William ?) So no last name for them and the names for Jannetje were just wrong Jans Harmtje (Harmtje spelled just as when it was a first name)

posted by Bea (Timmerman) Wijma
Workman-1606 and Workman-876 appear to represent the same person because: dates seem to fit and the wife is probably the same person...
posted by Robin Lee
None of the traditional sources claim to know his origin but there is a theory that he was German. yDNA suggests that he was Viking https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Wortman/default.aspx?section=ycolorized as Joseph Workman, b.c. 1736, New Jersey is a descendant.
posted by Carrie Quackenbush
Workman is the original name and was changed in the 17th century when John moved from England to Holland. See Workman-1606 for sources.
