Biography

Isabel Worsley was born circa 1460, the daughter of Otewell Worsley and Rose Trevor.[1][2]

Marriage & Children

She married, firstly, Sir Richard Culpeper, Sheriff of Kent, son of Sir William Culpeper and Elizabeth Ferrers, before 1480 as his second wife.[1] They had 1 son & 2 daughters: [3]
  1. Margaret Culpeper wife of Richard Welbeck, & William Cotton.[1]
  2. Joyce Culpeper wife of Ralph Leigh, & Edmund Howard[1]
  3. Thomas Culpeper[1]
She married, secondly, Sir John Leigh (or Legh), KB, Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex, son of Ralph Leigh, Esq., Chief Remembrance of the Exchequer in Ireland and Elizabeth Langley,[1] after 4 October 1484.[citation needed] They had 1 son & 1 daughter:

Death and Burial

Isabel died 18 April 1527, her husband John having predeceased her on 17 August 1523. [1] He left a will dated 12 June 1523 and proved 10 December 1523.[1][4] They were both buried in Leigh's Chapel in the parish church of St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey.[1]

Will

Isabel's will was dated 11 April 1527 and proved 26 May 1527.[1][5] Note that relationships can be confusing due to culturally differing naming to that expected today confounded more as Isabel married the older brother of her son in law Ralph. For example Joyce Stanney the daughter of her own daughter Joyce she refers to as her cousin. Key points in the will are listed below.[6]

o To be buried in the Chapel of St Nicholas with my husband.

o Daughter Margaret Cotton wife of William Cotton
o Daughter Elizabeth Legh wife of my cousin John Leygh
o Cousins John Legh, Rauf Leigh, Joyce Stanney and Joyce Carleton
o Elizabeth Leigh if unmarried
o Elizabeth Legh wife to John Legh
o Servant Margaret Metcalfe, goddaughter Joyce Welbeck, Margaret Welbeck
o Children of my daughter Cotton and her husband.
o Humphrey Charrossez wife
o Nieces Noks, Welden
o Margaret Legh
o Charles Howarde, Henry George, Margaret, Catherine Howarde, Mary Howarde my goddaughter.
o Sons Sir Edmund Howarde and William Cotton to pray for me.
o Residue to my daughter Lady Howarde upon condition that her husband redeem all lands the inheritance of my daughter Kent from her father Richard Colpeper and her brother Thomas Colpeper.
o The said Lord Edmund and Joyce his wife shall find sureties
o Executors nephew Edward Lee clerk the Kings Almoziner John Carleton gent John Legh Esquire
o Witnesses my lord Edmund Howard knight John Legh Esquire Rauf Legh gent. Sir Richard dean priest John Carleton gent my lady Howarde Elizabeth Leigh Joan Kelycke.

Probate 26th May 1527 to Edward Lee and John Carleton and John Legh Executors.

Research Notes

Elizabeth (Culpeper) Leigh (abt.1482-aft.1527) was named as a daughter of Richard and Isabel in Magna Carta Ancestry but is not included in Royal Ancestry as their daughter.

Isn't the will dated 6th of April? It looks like a "vi" April, like where it says "year of the reign of King Henry the "viii"?
