Biography

Born in Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia) Worthington travelled to the Northwest Territory with his brother-in-law, Dr. Edward Tiffin who would become the first governor of Ohio, settling in Chillicothe. He served in the Territorial House of Representatives and was delegate to the Ohio Constitutional Convention. He was one of the first two US Senators at statehood.
Elected as the 6th Governor in 1814, he moved the capital from Chillicothe to Columbus. In 1818 he was appointed canal commissioner and is remembered as the father of the "Ohio-Erie Canal".
