Biography

Beatrice (Farrell) Buckland was a homesteader in Stevens County, Kansas. Join the Homesteaders Project.

Beatrice was born 2 Jan 1859 on a plantation near what would later become Birmingham, Alabama (Birmingham was founded in 1871). Beatrice lived in Alabama until about the age of 10 at which time she went to Columbus, Ohio where she lived and was educated..[1]

From Columbus she was sent to Boston by the Congregational Church for special training for missionary work in areas populated by the Latter Day Saints. She completed her studies in Boston in 1882 and then went to Salt Lake City, Utah where for four years she worked as a Christian missionary.[1]

On 7 Aug 1886, she married O.P. Buckland[1] who at the time lived on a family farm in Stockton, Toole County, Utah. It should be noted that an obituary of O.P. indicates they married after O.P. moved to Kansas but but that begs the question why Beatrice would have come to Kansas if that were prior to marriage. Beatrice and O.P. came to Kansas in 1887 and filed and later proved a homestead claim in Stevens County.

In 1895, the family moved briefly to a farm near Optima, Oklahoma (No Man's Land at the time). In 1896, the family moved to Liberal, Kansas[2] and O.P. was initially a stockman but by about 1909 had started a plumbing business with his son Joe.[3] Census data appears to indicate that both O.P. and Joe may have been tinners as well, O.P. in Liberal and Joe in Morton County in 1910.[4]

O.P. passed away in 1920. Beatrice suffered several heart attacks from which she passed away 11 Mar 1924 at Liberal, Kansas and is interred at the Liberal Cemetery.[1][5]

An extended obituary in The Liberal News of 13 Mar 1924 attempts to sum up the contributions of Beatrice and begins, "Words are completely inadequate for any description of the life and work of Mrs Buckland. Her whole life was given to the service of others...it may be truthfully said of this little woman that 'she went about doing good.'" It was noted that she took particular joy in ministering to the needy whom others had passed by. The poor and neglected were her special charge.

Research Notes

In the 1880 US Census is found a Beatrix [sic] Ferrell working as a servant in the home of home of Walter and Phoebe Crafts.[7] While the Crafts are both born in Massachusetts, they have two children both born Alabama as is the servant Beatrice, however, the Census column for race is marked B (but this appears to be an overwrite of a W) and she is indicated as being unable to read or write. While this name, place and time are the only Beatrice Ferrell so far found in the Census data it would appear this is not the Beatrice Ferrell born in Alabama.
