According to the 1941 Des Moines City Directory, Junior was working as a mechanic for George's Service Garage in Des Moines, still living at home with his parents and siblings.
Junior served in the Navy in World War II. He served as part of the USNTS our of Great Lakes, Illinois, Lion Two, AATB, PT Lyaute FM, AATB Mostgarem Algeria, AATB Arzew Algeria, Tadcen Shoemaker California, USN Frontier Base Charleston South Carolina. He served from August 24, 1942 to May 21, 1945.[1] He was awarded the Victory Medal.[2]
Junior worked as a pressman at Meredith most of his life, retiring from there after 47 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunting; fishing for walleye, halibut, and salmon in Alaska and Canada; and often taking family along on vacations trapping. He was well-known for his outdoors skills, and was featured in publications, including the Iowa Conservation Magazine.[2]
Junior loved his family dearly, considering them his "greatest treasure". His motto was "It's not what you get out of life; it's what you put into it." [2]
