Ellen Clementine Fife Garrett was a daughter of John and Rachel (Aiken) Fife, and a descendant of John Fife, born in Fifeshire, Scotland, who came to America with his brother William, in 1756. The brothers located at Winchester, Virginia, and ten years later in Upper St. Clair township, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania. There they patented 1,000 acres of land from the government, naming their patents Fifeshire and Lambeth, after their Scottish home, each owning his land separate from the other. John Fife cultivated his farm in part until his death about the year 1800. He married, in Scotland, Margaret Wright, and had issue: William, of further mention ; Elizabeth, John, Margaret, Mary, married a Patterson; Jane, married a Thompson.
