Biography

Hopewell Friends History, p. 27; p. 487 gives birth date as 1671 [1]. However, another entry in Quaker Meeting Minutes states he died in 1759 at age 83.

Quaker records show that James Wright was taxed in East Nottingham, Chester Co, PA from 1718 to 1726, after which time he probably moved to Monocacy Valley in Frederick Co, MD. He was a distinguished minister of the Friends and travelled widely. During the French and Indian War, he and his wife apparently were forced to move, as they were objects of concern for Meeting for Sufferings in Philadelphia who were asked to send money for relief of Friends in ravaged districts. The Hopewell records state: "our Antient Friends James Wright and his Wife are much reduced being driven from their habitation and are unable to labour for a livelyhood." [2]

Original Quaker records (Hopewell p. 150) state that he died on the 15th day of the 5th month, 1759 in his 83rd year. [3]

His will was written October 8, 1751, with a codicil of April 30, 1753, and was probated on March 4, 1760 naming his wife Mary, his sons Thomas, John, James Jr., and Isaac, daughters Lydia Wright, Mary Ballinger (wife of Josiah Ballinger), Hannah Ballinger, Martha Mendenhall, Elizabeth Matthews, Ann McCool, Sarah Pickering. Bondsmen were Evan Rogers, James Ballinger. Witnesses were the same plus Sarah Rogers.[4]

Mary Wright's will was probated March 6, 1764, naming grandson Thomas (s/o Thomas & Esther Wright); wearing apparel to "my seven daughters, viz, Mary, Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lydia; and son Thomas Wright all my livestock... Land sold on Middle creek...it equally divided amongst all my ten children, viz, James, Isaac, Mary, Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lydia, & John. Executors, my well beloved daughter Mary Ballinger, Jesse Pugh, and Wm Pickering. Witnesses: Elinor Rogers, Susanna Bevan and Elizabeth Pennell. Sureties, James Mc Gin and Joseph Babb.[5][6]

There is also a George Wright listed in Frederick Co land records in Aug 1750 on Opeckon on the North side of Hites Waggon Road near Wright Run, dr. of Crooked Run adj. Wm Ewens. CC William Ewens & Robt Ashby. Surv. John Baylis. V5:8 Joyner.

There is also a Joseph Wright (and Jackman, Ross, Bell) listed as adjacent land holders to Col Elias Edmonds of Fauquier; survd 4 Mar 1784, 33 a. on Towser's Br. John Moffett Surv. Joyner V.5:45 Forfeited Plats.

Frederick County, Virginia Hopewell Friends History : The will of James Wright was probated March 4, 1764. He leaves to his son Thomas "the Home plantation, being 194 acres of my patent Land." He makes bequests to his sons John, James Jr., and Isaac, and to his daughters Lydia Wright, Mary Ballinger, Hannah Ballinger, Martha Mendenhall, Elizabeth Matthews, Ann McCool, and Sarah Pickering. His wife Mary is named executrix, who entered into bond with Evan Rogers and James Ballinger as bondsmen. The will was witnessed by Evan Rogers, James Ballinger, and Sarah Rogers.

Hopewell was the first Quaker meeting established in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was originally known as Opeckan and was set off from the Concord Quarterly Meeting of Pennsylvania in 1734. The actual date of first settlement is thought to be around 1730.The meeting house is located about 6 miles north of Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia.

A land grant of 100,000 acres was purchased on the Opeckan River. Many of the earliest settlers moved into the area from the Valley of the Monocacy in Maryland.

(Smith's History of Pennsylvania was compiled at the direction of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1752.)
"About the year 1725, Henry Ballinger and Josiah Ballinger, from near Salem, in West Jersey [Salem Co., N.J.]; and soon after them James Wright, William Beals, and others from Nottingham [Chester Co., Pa.], settled in the upper parts of Prince George's County, Maryland, near a large creek called Monoquesey [Monocacy]. About the year 1726, they applied to New Garden Monthly Meeting for liberty to hold a meeting for worship on first days, which was granted, and held at the house of Josiah Ballinger, and others till the year 1736, when a piece of ground was purchased and a meeting-house built, which is called Cold Spring meeting-house, where meetings are still kept."

"Hopewell Friends History, p. 27; p. 487 gives birth date as August 1671"

Here are those two pages: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015067894199&view=1up&seq=517 https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015067894199&view=1up&seq=43

I don't see a birth year but not month specified. Where did "August 1671" come from?

Thanks. Corrected.

Wright-57573 and Wright-3063 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person
The birth record for Mary Davis born to James and Margaret shows she WAS born March 16, 1674 in Maryland. The birth record is available at FamilySearch. There is some other sources that point to her marrying James Wright -- something in John Beal Jr's wedding, and a court document that lists John Davis and his sister Mary Wright. It's circumstantial and ultimately doesn't overcome the fact that the birthdate doesn't match the Hopewell records, and she would have been too old to be the mother of about half the children in the family.

Mary Wentworth married a completely different James Wright in Massachusetts.

The Mary Bowater that married Stephen Ailes was actually the half-niece of the Mary Bowater that some claim married James Wright, even though they were born nearly the same year -- her father was pretty old, and her mother was his second wife. The evidence that she's the one who married James is fairly strong, but ultimately still circumstantial. There's no absolute proof yet, and still a lot of unanswered questions.

My personal two cents: the names here are ridiculously common. We're trying to construct a story from scant records could just as well say "a man" and "a woman". Was there only one James Wright in that part of the world at that time? Did he only only have one wife named Mary, or could we be missing records of a second marriage? Or maybe the Mary Davis born in 1674 did marry *a* James Wright, just not this one.

It seems unlikely he'd marry two different Marys 20 days apart.

From Mary Bowater Wright's profile: "Those who say Mary's surname is Davis likely got their info from the now disproven book by Walter I. Farmer: In America since 1607. It claims that Mary Davis was of Welsh descent and from Manaoken, Somerset, MD. It also says her birthdate was 16 Mar 1674 and her marriage 2 Dec 1689. This birth date aligns with other children of her supposed parents, James and Margaret Davis, but in no way aligns with the published Quaker birth date for Mary Wright in Hopewell MM records. It also has no other first hand support, other than a family group sheet that states her name and dates came from "Records from the Society of Friends, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Penn in 1908" (C-956)."

There's a very good argument supported by documents that Mary Bowater married Stephen Ailes, not James Wright, here, though I don't see any evidence for Mary Davis or Mary Wentworth being James' wife: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/101049646/mary-wright
