Origins

A 1983 article argues against Richard being the son of William Wright and Priscilla:[1]

  • William's 1633 will makes no mention of a son Richard.[2]
  • Richard's age at death (83 in 1691) translates to a 1608 birth, too early to be son of William and Priscilla, because Priscilla's age at death calculates to a 1598 birth.[3] William and Richard were more likely brothers or cousins.

Biography

Summary

  • He was born about 1608. The record states that he died in 1691, Richard Wright, about two hours after being 83 years old.[1][4]
  • He died 9 JUN 1691 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA[1][5]

Details

In a 1637 deed, Richard Wright is called "taylor."[citation needed]

  • The deed is summarized as:

A deed to George Russell, 17 November 1637, for the sale of 4 or 5 acres upon 'Oulbery Playne' calls Richard Wright of New Plymouth 'Taylor' [6]

Richard Wright married 1644 Hester Cooke.[7] While 36, this was likely his first marriage since he wasn't admitted as a Freeman until 4 Jun 1645.[8]

In 1652, he was chosen Constable for Plymouth.[9]

He received numerous grants of land from the Colony and from the town of Plymouth.[10][11]

9-21 May 1669: gave five acres in Plymouth to his second son, John, with wife Esther releasing dower.[12]

Richard Wright died in Plymouth 9 Jun 1691.[13]

His will, dated 8 Jun 1691, sworn 24 Jun 1691, names "my three children, Adam, Esther and Mary."[14] Three sons -- John, Isaac and Samuel-- died, per probate records btw 7 Dec 1675 and7 Jun 1676, possibly in King Philip's War, although not named in George M. Bodge, Soldiers in King Philip's War. (Boston 1906).

In addition to the 1983 article in this bio, William Wright came on the "Fortune" in 1621 without any fellow travelers listed and received 2 acres in the 1623 land division which he shared with William Pitt which would indicate each was single at the time.

He was still apparently single in the 1627 cattle division and no "Carpenters" appeared in that list, so Priscilla seems to have arrived after 1627 and married William after that date. So even apart from ages of all 3 parties as pointed out in the bio, it seems extremely unlikely that she was Richard's mother, traveling 8 years after her husband. And of course giving birth at the age of 10.

I have done more research, and there is a lot of conflict in what i have found, alot of material says William is father but other information says no. ???????????? what do we believe and don't.? Harley

I May be wrong but I am pretty sure William Wright Abt. 1600- abt1633 & Priscilla Carpenter abt 1597-1689 are the Parents of Richard Wright. North American Family Histories Says Hester married Richard Wright the son of William and Priscilla (Carpenter) Wright. Richard is my 11th great Grandfather. It also give Richard's Children as Adam, Esther Mary, John, Isaac. The only children that are known of.

Anne, I went and listed the unproven children in the section of the narrative about the children (see section). So you can now detach those children from this profile. They're still linked to in the bio. Ideally each of them would have a "disputed origins" section in THEIR bio.

I'm stumped. I've spent way too long trying to figure this out. There are children on the list in the data section, ( John Wright, Sarah Wright, Lydia Wright, Jacob Wright, Thomas Wright, Peter Wright and Mary Wright), who are not on the generally accepted children list (see the bio). I've tried to find parents for them. They don't belong to Richard of Lynn, either. Unless someone has a good reason to believe they belong, they should be disconnected.

Richard Wright (Wright-12918) and Richard Wright (Wright-315) are definitely the same person, I'm checking on a lower # profile, before proposing merge.
