Biography

John Wright was born in about 1698.

John (husbandman of Stapenhill Derbyshire) purchased a licence to marry Ann Sterley (of Atherstone, (both of aged 28 [1697]) on 4 October 1725.[1] They married the same day at Lichfield, The Close.[2] The following children was baptised to John and Ann in Mancetter (near Atherstone):

  • Mary Wright was baptised on 1 January 1726 N. S. in Mancetter.[3]
  • Ann Wright was baptised on 5 March 1730 in Mancetter.[4]


Research Notes

  • 14 May 1730, the will of Richard Sturley of Atherstone, rope maker, named son Francis Sturley; well beloved wife; son Robert Sturley; daughter Anne. Witnessed by Richard Jefcoate, Francis Clarke, and Thomas Jefcoate. Proved 1736.[5]
  • Possible daughter: Mary (Wright) Gee.
  • John Hankerson and Ann Wright married on 31 May 1763 in Mancetter. The witnesses were "Charls" Brown ~ and Thomas Cooper.[6]
  • Francis Sturley of Nuneaton married Mary Gee of Atherstone on 28 June 1704 in Nuneaton.[7]
  • Dorothy Sturley, widow, was buried on 20 January 1739 N. S.[8]
  • Richard Sturley married Dorothy Willow on 15 July 1680 in Mancetter.[9]
  • Written in 1678, the will of Nicholas Sturley of Atherstone, ropemaker, named daughter Elizabeth; wife Mary; two sons Richard and John joint executors. Witnessed by John Power, Thomas Marsh and Tho [Mountstey].
  • Nicholas Sturley was baptised 16 March 1608 in Mancetter, to Richard.[10]
  • The will of Ann Wright of Stapenhill, Derby, widow, named nephew Joseph Dodsworth; nephew William Dodsworth. Written 2 December 1703 and witnessed by George Bowler, John Warren and Jo: Barker. Inventory taken 15 March 1704 by George Bowler and John Wright.
  • Written on 15 January 1661, the will of John Wright of Stapenhill, yeoman named daughters Ann Wright and Elizabeth Dodsworth; Ann Wright my eldest daughter; Thomas Dodsworth my son in Law, of Walton in parish of [Ballage] in Stafford, yeoman, executor; Thomas Buckley of Stapenhill, gent and Francis Alsley yeoman, overseers. Witnessed by Thomas Wright, Tho Knight and Chrophilus [Golcher]. Inventory taken 30 June 1663.
