Biography

Laura Ann was born in 1817 in Jefferson County, NY, probably in Adams, to Eli Wright and Abigail Green, She grew up in Adams, and in 1836, married Harvey Bailey there. They settled further north in LaFargeville, NY in the Town of Orleans where they raised four children, one of whom died young. Her husband earned a living as a harness maker and also held a number of town offices and sat in the New York State Assembly. In the 1860s, the family moved first to Watertown, NY, and then re-settled back in Adams, NY, where they lived out the remainder of their days with their daughter, Adelaide. Harvey passed away there in 1891 and Laura Ann followed in 1899.^[1] They are buried together in the Adams Rural Cemetery with other members of their family.

Obituary

Jefferson County Journal (Watertown, NY), 17 Jan 1899.^[2]

"Mrs Laura Bailey widow of the late Hon. Harvey Bailey, died very suddenly of pneumonia at her home North Main Street Thursday noon, aged 81 years. Mrs Bailey was the daughter of Eli Wright, and was born on Wright Street near this village. She was converted under the preaching of Rev. Jediah Burchard at an early age and united with the Presbyterian Church of which she has ever been a faithful and consistent member. She married Mr. Bailey and for a time they resided in Lafargeville and Watertown, but returned to this place about 35 years ago. About eight years ago Mr. Bailey passed away and since that time she has resided with her daughter, who has kindly cared for her and cheered her declining years. She was a kind and genial neighbor and held the respect of all who knew her. She leaves one daughter, Miss Addie Bailey, with whom she resided, and two sons, Newton of Auburn and Edward of Buffalo; also the large circle of brothers and sisters in the church and the entire community to mourn her death. The funeral was held at the residence Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. Rosser Jones officiating. Interment in Rural Cemetery."

The relationship of Eli Wright to his daughter Laura Ann has been associated with an autosomal dna segment (Chromosome 1: 190,325,645 to 203,909,013 of length 15.5 cM, 2,445 SNPs [GEDmatch analysis, 6 Nov 2015]) between Douglas Gary Anderson (GEDmatch kit M612162) and Thomas Fitz Randolph (GEDmatch kit M011134) that links back to Benjamin Cooley (1681-1745) and Margaret Bliss (1683-1744). This association remains to be confirmed through triangulation with a third person.
