Notes
Note N00013Agnes was born in Dayton, Ohio. At the age of 14, Agnes and her family moved to Knoxville, Iowa. She later went to Savannah, Georgia due to poor health. There she met and married the druggist, Fred Cotton Chase. He had been married before and we have pictures of some of his children from that marriage. The couple, Fred and Agnes, moved to Washington D.C., probably around the turn of the century, and their first child was born there in February of 1901. She was not quite 1 month old when she died of congestion of the lungs. My grandmother, Gertrude Uretta Chase was born in 1904. The family stayed in D.C. until at least 1917 when Fred died. In 1925, Agnes, her daughter Gertrude, and my father, Bob Jarboe (age 1) moved to Spokane, Washington. A trip that took 3 months in a 1922 Chevrolet driven by Gertrude's son to be ex-brother-in-law, John F. Jarboe.
Agnes and her grandson eventually moved to San Francisco, CA and Agnes was responsible for much of the raising of her grandson, Robert Jarboe. The two lived in San Francisco during the depression of the 1930's. Bobbie would pass an empty lot on the way home from school that had tomatoes growing. He would pick them and take them home to his grandmother. The two lived on tomato soup, stewed tomatoes, tomato anything... but they got through those days. Bob tells the story of how he wanted to join the Cub Scouts. He would have to take the trolly to and from the meetings but his grandmother could not afford the 10 cents fare. He went to the first meeting and never went again.
She had beautiful red hair which was passed down to her grandson, Robert and then to his daughters, Robin and Jill, and then to his graddaughter Kelsey. Robert always said he was fond of redheads-a tribute to his grandmother. (information from Bob Jarboe)
Agnes received Fred's pension from the Spanish American War. (notes from Mary Alice Jarboe Avery)
Note N00163I (Jill Jarboe Woodward) found a copy of the 1900 U.S. Census for Richmond, Monroe Ward, Richmond City, Virginia where a Agnes Wright, born Nov. 1869, age 30, single, sales woman, living at the same address (probably a boarding house) as a Fred C. Chase, born Aug 1861, age 38, Single, druggist. This kind of puts a lie to the family story that they met and married in Savannah, Georgia and then moved north. It, also, puts credence to the other family story, that their daughter, Gertrude Chase attended her parent wedding. I just can't find a record of such a wedding.
