Janet Wright married James Hamilton in 1881 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, when she was 21 years old. Her son William Edward "Will" was born on May 4, 1882, in Wishaw, Lanarkshire. After his birth, in 1884, she and her husband and young child, left their homeland in Scotland to emigrate to America. They arrived somewhere between 1884 and 1885.

The small family settled first in Manor, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania which is recorded in the 1900 Census. The family grew in Pennsylvania as they had four more children. Jane (1885-1946), Anna Beatrice (1887-1934), Margaret (1889-1928), and Mary (1890-1900) rounded out the family. By that time they had settled in the town of Export also in Westmoreland County. According to the 1900 US Census, James was a coal miner. Janet Hamilton died on September 13, 1945, in Export, Pennsylvania, at the age of 85, and was buried in Madison, Pennsylvania.
