Biography

James Franklin Wright served with the Confederate Army. He enlisted on 16 July, 1862 and served 3 years under Wallis Lanis in Company A. While in the service he was captured by Union Soldiers in Arkansas. He was enroute with his captors when he decided to take a chance on an escape. That evening he went to bed early, pretending to fall asleep, he made loud snoring sounds yo convince his captors that he was indeed asleep. When the appropriate time manifested itself, James slipped out of the camp and into the nearby brush. He found a horse, led him out of the area, saddles him up and rides for home. On his way, as he approached the White River, he was nearly captured again. When he was obseved by Union Troops who called out, "Who's Brigade are you in?" He replied, "Bryan's Brigade." The soldiers let him pass.

This story was told to Ollie Wright by Mammie Wright. (Mariah Amanda Dean) Ollie told the story to Helen Wright Brown, the Daughter of Samual Wright.

In about 1981, I got in contact with Floyd Mings, A descendant of William Phillips and Mary(Polly)Sheppard. He was about 85 at the time. He told a story about how the Mings and Wright Family farms were back to back to each other. When he was a young man he remembered my Grandpa Wright riding up to the Mings farm. James slipped from his horse onto the front porch, exhausted and wheezing from his asthma.

It was quite remarkable to speak with someone who knew my Grandfather. James Wright died in 1910 and there are not many people left that knew him.
