Biography

Malinda was born April 20, 1820 in Overton County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Joshua Wright and Sarah Lamar.

Fentress County was created from Morgan and Overton County in 1823. It is likely the Wrights lived in the area that became Fentress County, before they came to Benton County Arkansas.

Malinda was the 1st wife of William Oakes. They married in about 1844 in Fentress Co, Tennessee. William & Malinda had nine children, Henry Jackson, Marilla, Sarah Elizabeth, George Washington, Ida Armilda, Rama, Alexander, James W. and John Wesley Oakes.

2. Alexander Oakes (1847-1934) m1. Rebecca E. (Hammons) Jackson; m2. Mary Rosa Howard; m3. Amanda L. (Baker) Buckner-Boyd. Union Civil War soldier (Company F, 1st Arkansas Cavalry).
3. Sarah Elizabeth Oakes (c.1849-1921) m. Randolph Crowley. Settled at Buhl, Idaho.
4. George Washington Oakes (1850-1890). Died at Reno, Nevada after being snow-bound.
5. James Oakes (1852-1827) m. Mrs. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hutchinson
6. Ida Armilda Oakes (c.1853-1924) m. Henry Tandy Owens. They settled in California.
7. Rama Oakes (1855-1931) m. Rebecca Fanny Fletcher. They settled in Oklahoma.
8. John Wesley Oakes (1858-1933) m. Mary Elnora Castor

She passed away September 18, 1859 in Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas. ^[1] Her cause of death was listed as "abortion", so it is assumed that this refers to a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage and that she died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. The name of the child is unknown and was likely stillborn. Malinda was laid to rest in Oakes Cemetery, Bella Vista, Benton County, Arkansas, United States. ^[2]

Research Notes

Family records show her name was spelled "Malinda" and not "Malindia" as shown on her headstone.

The 1850 census lists she was born about 1823 in Tennessee.
