Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Job Wright immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Oyster Bay, Queens, New York Colony

Job Wright was the son of Peter Wright and his wife Alice who migrated to Saugus (now Lynn), Massachusetts Bay Colony in August of 1635 then went to Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1638 and finally to Oyster Bay in 1653.[1] Job's siblings were Adam (b. March 20, 1650; Hannah, Peter, Gideon, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Lydia and Jacob. Their father was drowned in Virginia with Gideon appointed as administrator on April 12, 1675.[2]

In May 1677, Job is among those entitled to vote and hold office in Oyster Bay, as Freeholders of the town.[1]

Oyster Bay, home to Job Wright, was settled by the Dutch, and was the boundary between the Dutch New Amsterdam colony and the English New England Colonies. Many Quakers came to Oyster Bay, escaping persecution from Dutch authorities in New Amsterdam. These included Elizabeth Feake and her husband Captain John Underhill who she converted to Quakerism. Other notable Quakers to settle in Oyster Bay were the brothers John Townsend and Henry Townsend. [3]

Job is not mentioned when, after the death of her 2nd husband Richard Crabb in 1685, his mother gave Lydia Horner two shares by the will of her brother Anthony Wright, daughter Mary Andrews, grandchildren Job and Alice Townsend. Three sons, Gideon, Jacob and Adam Wright. Two sons-in-law, Samuel Andrews and Isaac Horner.[2]

Job Wright had two sons, Anthony Wright-38139, and Jacob Wright-38131. That is well-supported by his will, quoted in full in this profile, and by the definitive family genealogy of the Wrights, which cites sources, is viewable on HathiTrust, and is cited on this profile. So please connect these two profiled sons to their project-protected father and mother.

Thanks, cousin Halsey. The profiles have been connected. I also searched for daughter Hannah, but she doesn't seem to have a profile yet. It looks like Robert Townsend (1674-) might be the Robert Townsend who she supposedly married.

Also, thank you for the improvements to the profile. If you have time, it would be wonderful if you could use some of that to maybe improve Rachel Townsend's profile as well.

Hi Carl!

Could you please include the source for the transcription you added to the profile?

Thank you!

It has been reported that he has a daughter Elizabeth (Wright-54095). Evidently this is wrong. See Wright-54095 for more information.

Based on the following post (http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~fesschequy/genealogy/WrightOysterBay.html), Job could not have been born in Oyster Bay, NY because his parents didn't settle there until 1653. The likely birthplace for Job is Lynn, MA, where Peter and his brothers first settled in America.

In addition, according to Oyster Bay's wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_Bay_(town),_New_York), the town was occupied by native Americans in 1636. The first purchase of land by European settlers was in 1639 and 1640.

I couldn't actually find a date of birth or place of birth for Job. I generalized to 1635, England. I also did additional updating to profile.

Can you find a source that is more specific?

Wright-11972 and Wright-205 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. They have the same parents.
