Milton's family moved by covered wagon, homesteading, to Nebraska around 1899. The Gearheart family also homesteaded via covered wagon to Nebraska. They met at a shooting contest; Milton was impressed when Zoe shot an egg at 50 yards with a 22 caliber gun, outshooting others. She was 11, Milton was 13.
