Lebbeus Wright is a part of US Black heritage.

Lebbeus B. Wright was born in Livingston County, NY, in 1804[1], a son of Jacob and Sarah Wright, probably in the Black settlement known as Abraham's Plain..

Before 1820, the family had left Avon and moved south. They settled in Pennsylvania.

  • In 1839, Libbeus, Jacob, and Phebe Wright moved from Pennsylvania to Busti, Chatauqua NY.[2]
  • In 1850, Libbern Wright (46) lived with his niece Phebe Wright (17) and his parents Jacob Wright (77) and Sarah Wright (75) in Busti NY. His occupation was farmer.[3]
  • In 1855, Lebbeus B Wright (52, native voter) lived with his niece Phebe Jane Wright (20) and his father Jacob Wright (82, mulatto, person of color not taxed) in Busti NY.[4]
  • In 1860, Lbius Wright (56) lived with his niece Jane Wright (24). His occupation was farmer.[5]

In his will, Lebbeus left everything to his his niece Phebe Jane, but she predeceased him by a month, so everything went to his surviving siblings.

Will

Know all men by these presents that I Lebbeus B. Wright of the Town of Busti of the County of Chautauqua and State of New York being sound of mind and memory do make sign seal publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and for following to wit:

I give and bequeath to my niece Phebe Jane Wright (daughter of Jonathon Wright) all my real estate and all my personal property of every name and description.

The above is to be subject (of course) to the prompt payment of all just debts against my estate and I further hereby constitute and appoint the said Phebe Jane Wright sole excutrix of this my last will and testatment. I also hereby revoke all former wills by me made. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of Sept. A.D. 1856. Lebbeus B. Wright S.S.

At a Surrogates Court held at Mayville in and for the County of Chautaugua, on the 20th day of October 1862 before George A. Greer Esquire Surrogate of said County.

In the matter of the estate of Lebbeus B. Wright deceased

On the day and year and at the place aforesaid Timothy Wright a brother of Lebbeus B. Wright late of the town of Busti in said County appeared and offered the said Will for probate and made satisfactory proof before the said Surrogate that the said deceased died on the 13th day of September 1862. That at the time of his death he was an inhabitant of Busti in said County of Chautaugua. That he died leaving a last Will and Testament which is now exhibited in the said Surogate Court which bear date on the first day of September 1856 which relates to real and personal estate that the following named persons are all the heirs and next of kin of the said deceased with their ages and places of residence as nearly as can be ascertained viz: Simon Wright & Sally Nichols wife of John Nichols of Rockdale, Crawford County in the State of Pennsylvania. Timothy Wright of Spring Creek Township Warren County, Pa, Jacob Wright of Columbus Township, Warren Co., Pa, Elizabeth Shirlock wife of Stephen Shirlock and Phineas Wright of the township of Spring Creek, Warren County, Pa. the brothers and sisters of the deceased. John Powers of Busti Chautauqua County NY, Jonathon Wright of Collins Erie County, NY, all above the age of 21 years that the said deceased left no widow or children or the decendents of any kind. Therefore ordered that a citation issue to the widows heirs and next of kin of the said deceased to appear and attend the probate of the said will before the said surrogate at his office in Mayville on the 8th day of December next at ten o’clock in the forenoon.

On testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal of office this 20th day of October 1862. G. A. Green Surrogate.

At a Surrogate Court held at Mayville in and for the County of Chautaugua this 8th day of December 1862 before George A. Green Esquire Surrogate of said County.

In the matter of the estate of Lebbeus B. Wright deceased

On the day and place aforesaid the above named Timothy Wright a brother of the said Lebbeus Wright deceased, deceased appeared and prayed that the said will be admitted to probate and exhibed the following proofs.

Whereupon the following witnesses being duly sworn testified as follows.

Chautaugua County ss.

Morris Norton of the town of Harmony being duly sworn doth depose and say that he is a subscribing witness to the last Will and Testament of the said deceased: that the said testator did, in the presence of this deponent subscribe his name at the end of the instrument which is now shown and exhibited to him and which purports to be the last will and testament of the said Lebbeus B. Wright deceased and which bears date on the first day of September in the year One thousand eight hundred and fifty six and this deponent further with that the said testator did at the said time of subscribing his name as aforesaid at the end of the said will declare the said instrument so subscribed and now exhibited to be his last Will and testament and this deponent and Theresa M. Norton of Harmony aforesaid did there upon subscribe their names at the end of the said Will as attesting witnesses thereby in the presence and at the request of the said Testator. And this deponent further with that at the said time where the said Testator subscribed his name to the said last Will as aforesaid and at the time of this deponent subscribing his name as an attesting witness thereunto as aforesaid the said testator was of sound mind and memory of full age to execut a will and was not under any restraint and that the will now appears in all respects as where so executed with any alteration whatsever. Theresa M. Partridge formerly Theresa M. Norton of the town of Harmony being duly sworn doth depose and say that she is a subscribing witness to the last Will and Testament of the said deceased that the said Testator did in the presence of this deponent subscribe his name at the end of the instrument which is now shown and exhibited to him and which purports to be the last will and testament of the said Lebbeus B. Wright deceased and which bears date on the first day of September in the year one thousand and eight hundred and fifty-six and this deponent further saith that the said testator did at the said time of subscribing his name as aforesaid at the end of the said will declare the said instrument so subscribed and now exhibited to be his last Will and Testament and this deponent and Morris Norton of Harmony in said County did thereupon subscribe their names at the end of the said will as attesting witnesses thereto in the presence and at the request of the said testator and this deponent further saith that at the said time where the testator subscribed his name to the said last will as aforesaid and at the time of this deponents subscribing her name as an attesting witness there to as aforesaid the said testator was of sound mind and memory of full age to execute a will and was not under any restraint and that the will now appears in all respects as where so executed without any alteration whatsoever. In the matter of proving the last will and testament of Lebbeus Wright deceased On the day above stated O. Cook Esq. appeared for Jacob Wright one of the heirs at law and next of kin of Lebbeus Wright deceased whose will is this day propounded for probate and objects to the validity of the said will for the reason that the sole device and legatee named in the said will died before the said testator and offered the following proofs upon that question.

John Stevens being duly sworn says he is a resident of Busti Chau Co. I lived as near neighbour to Lebbeus B. Wright deceased. I also knew Phebe Jane Wright. She lived with and kept house for the said Lebbeus a number of years. She died in the town of Busti in the month of August last. I saw her after she was dead. The said Lebbeus B. Wright died in Busti aforesaid in the month of September last. I was at his home soon after he died. They are the same persons mentioned in the will now in Court. The said Lebbeus left real and personal property. John Stevens

Wherefore it is ordered adjudged and decreed by the said Surrogate of the County of Chautaugua that the said Will is without force and effect and that the heirs and next of kin of Phebe Jane Wright the desired legatee named in said will can take nothing by said Will.
