Dr. F. W. Wright was born in London in 1825. His father, name unknown, was paymaster at Admiralty House who, on retirement in 1835, took up land in Canada. Frederick William was educated there and gained his medical qualification at Toronto University in 1857.

Arrived in Auckland c.1860 and entered practice with his father-in-law, Dr. S. J. Stratford (d.1871), then a Dr. Dawson and later on his own until retirement c.1898.

Dr. Wright was an enthusiastic amateur artist and a foundation member of the Auckland Society of Artists in 1870.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, three married daughters, and three sons - Walter, Hugh and Harry, who were all dentists. (Obituary in New Zealand Herald, 26 June 1903, page 6)
