Biography

It has recently been proven through DNA testing that descendants of this line share genetics with the known "Oyster Bay Wrights". A new-found cousin, Diane Wright had the following to say in a recent email:

My brother has done a Y-DNA test on the Wright genealogy project. Recently, a known Oyster Bay Wright male descendant has done a Y-DNA test and his result has matched ours, showing that Captain Peter Wright was from the Oyster Bay Wrights. Peter's parents would be Joseph Wright and Temperance Seaman as has been thought for some time due to circumstantial evidence. Joseph Wright's will mentions that his wife Temperance Seaman is pregnant and Captain Peter Wright has several descendants named Seaman Wright.

DAR #159024: Peter Wright (1740-1821) served as captain and recruiting officer, North Kingstown, R.I.; also private on the Vermont Alarms under Colonels Herrick and Walbridge. He was born in Hempstead, L.I.; died in Shaftsbury, Vt.[1]

Life & Times

The first real settlement was begun in 1653, when land was bought from the Matinecock Indians by Peter Wright and Samuel Mayo and William Leverich, and the purchase included the present bounds of Oyster Bay village. The price was paid on a much more liberal scale than usual and included "six Indian coats, six kettles, six fathom of wampum, six hoes, six hatchets, three pair of stockings; thirty awl blades or muxes, twenty knives, three shirts, and as much peaque [wampum shells] as will amount to four pounds sterling."[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
